YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer’s purpose is to inspire and equip people to find their path, to unlock potential, and to create leaders of consequence. As a Program Instructor, you will be the spark that ignites curiosity and confidence in others. You’ll bring the magic of nature to life by leading discovery-based environmental lessons, challenge groups to step outside their comfort zones by facilitating both low and high ropes activities, and help participants uncover new passions through recreation-based activities like archery and candle making. Along the way, you’ll create a fun, welcoming, and safe environment where every participant feels encouraged, supported, and empowered.
POSITION SUMMARY
This is a hands-on field position that directly involves facilitating groups of students and adults in outdoor, environmental, recreational and challenge course activities. In addition, this position is responsible for creating a fun, safe, and positive atmosphere that promotes camper safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Plan and facilitate classes to groups of children, young people and/or adults in four disciplines of adventure, outdoor skills, environmental education and recreational activities.
2. Maintain specialized outdoor education equipment.
3. Assist with special programs and events.
4. Assist with cleaning and preparation of camp facilities.
5. Lead night hike, campfires and other evening programs.
6. Assist with curriculum development and program planning.
7. Lead groups in the dining hall with food procedures, cleaning procedures, and set up.
8. Actively participate in staff meetings, staff trainings, and in-service activities.
9. Provide a safe and responsible atmosphere for children and adults to learn and grow.
10. Provide emergency care to all participants as needed, based on current certifications.
11. Demonstrate mature and responsible conduct while sharing staff accommodations, respecting the privacy and well-being of co-workers and contributing to a positive community living environment.
12. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 18 years of age, required
- High school diploma or equivalent, required
- Experience in outdoor education and facilitation of high and low challenge courses, preferred
- Current YMCA lifeguard, or equivalent certification, preferred
- Associates degree in education, recreation, environmental science, biology, botany or relevant field, preferred
- First Aid and CPR/AED certified or ability to obtain upon hiring, required
- Proficient in the English language, preferred
- Walk, hike and run in varying terrain and elevations
- Have the ability to work long days outside in various weather conditions
