Endowment Finance & Governance Intern

Internship Overview 

This internship provides a unique opportunity to strengthen the financial backbone of a leading conservation non-profit through the strategic review of the TWS endowment. By investigating fund restrictions and researching endowment best practices, the intern will ensure the effective stewardship of donor support and improve transparency in our accounting processes. The impact of this work will directly support TWS’s long-term sustainability, creating a clear framework for Giving & Impact to communicate impact and drive future fundraising efforts.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Research and review endowment governance best practices, including an analysis of subaccount reporting methods and specialized software options.
  • Assist in developing a case for support for the endowment by translating financial releases into program-specific and donor-specific data.
  • Investigate and resolve missing information related to specific named funds to ensure accurate historical records.
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities to amend or dissolve legacy named funds that create disproportionate administrative burdens.
  • Design and implement a standardized process to track gift restrictions across program areas to support annual audits.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures set forth by TWS (including, but not limited to, finance, human resources and legal) to maintain a compliant and efficient work environment. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 
 

  • Currently enrolled in or recent graduate (within 2 years) of an accredited college or university, preferably with a focus on Finance, Accounting, Non-Profit Management, or Business Administration.
  • Strong analytical and detective skills with a high attention to detail when reviewing financial documents or contracts.
  • Proficiency in Excel (e.g. data organization, pivot tables) and an interest in learning financial software systems.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to summarize complex financial information for non-finance audiences.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently on research projects while meeting 10-week program milestones.
  • A commitment to TWS values, including financial transparency and equitable stewardship of resources.
