Summer Discovery at Cornell - Middle School Outdoor Adventure Specialist

Program Dates: July 6 - August 1, 2026

Position Overview: Summer Discovery at Cornell University is seeking an energetic and experienced Adventure Specialist to lead athletic programming for our middle school students. This position involves designing and delivering engaging sports instruction across multiple disciplines while fostering skill development, teamwork, and a love of physical activity in a safe and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and lead daily adventure and outdoor activities for middle school students (grades 6–8)
  • Instruct and facilitate experiences in areas such as nature photography, bonfire building, bike rides, outdoor survival skills, and other adventure-based activities
  • Create age-appropriate lessons, challenges, and excursions that accommodate varying skill and experience levels
  • Ensure all activities prioritize student safety and follow proper protocols for outdoor and adventure programming
  • Foster an inclusive environment that encourages participation from all students, regardless of prior outdoor experience
  • Maintain equipment and coordinate use of Cornell's outdoor facilities and surrounding natural areas
  • Supervise students during all activities and maintain appropriate staff-to-student ratios
  • Collaborate with program staff to integrate adventure programming into the overall curriculum
  • Adapt programming based on weather conditions, facility availability, and student interests
  • Model outdoor stewardship, a growth mindset, and positive group dynamics

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate expertise in outdoor and nature-based education. 
  • Strong understanding of age-appropriate skill development and outdoor safety practices
  • Excellent communication and group management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse students and staff
  • Available for the full program dates: July 6 – August 1, 2026
  • At least 20 years of age

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Wilderness First Aid, CPR, or relevant outdoor education certification (will be provided upon hire)
  • Experience working in residential or day camp settings
  • Background in youth development, environmental education, or adventure programming
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish or Mandarin preferred)

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to actively participate in and demonstrate outdoor and adventure activities, including hiking, cycling, and hands-on nature exploration
  • Comfortable working in outdoor environments across varying weather conditions
  • Capable of standing and engaging in sustained physical activity for extended periods
