GIS/Cartographic Intern

Metro is looking for a GIS & Cartographic Intern to provide GIS analysis, cartographic support, and visualization expertise for the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). This role offers exposure to regional transportation policies, project evaluation, and transportation performance measurement, while working closely with planning, modeling, data analysis and public involvement staff.

This position is open to college students, recent graduates or individuals with GIS experience.

As the GIS & Cartographic Intern you will

  • Perform GIS analysis and manage geographic data in support of updates to the Regional Transportation Plan and Climate Smart Strategy
  • Create maps, charts, diagrams, and tables to effectively communicate technical information

 

Attributes for success

  • Ability to conduct research and synthesize technical information into clearly written communications and visual formats
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets for managing and organizing data
  • Proficiency with GIS software (e.g. ArcPro, ArcGIS Online)
  • Familiarity with data visualization and graphic design tools (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, PowerBI, ArcGIS Storymap)
  • Education or coursework in GIS, geography, urban planning, environmental studies, or a related field.

Minimum qualifications

  • Proficiency with GIS and experience with GIS software (ArcGIS Pro/ArcGIS Online).
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets for organizing and managing data.
  • Familiarity with data visualization and graphic design tools (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, PowerBI, ArcGIS Storymap).
  • Ability to synthesize technical information into clear, simple maps and graphics.
  • Education or coursework in GIS, geography, urban planning, environmental studies, or a related field.
  • Any combination of education, professional, volunteer and lived experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the classification duties and responsibilities.

Hybrid Telework 

This position is designated as “hybrid telework.” You will be required to work onsite and at times have the option to work away from your assigned work location. The specific schedule and balance of onsite and telework will be discussed with the hiring manager at the time of offer. Employees must reside in Oregon or Washington to work at Metro. Please note, the designation of hybrid telework may be subject to change at a future time.

 

Like to have qualifications

You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider them when identifying the most qualified candidates. Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience, including the military, or life experience that are relevant for this position.

  • GIS certificate programs (such as the Portland Community College GIS Program)
  • Strong interest in pursuing a career in planning, GIS, transportation/climate data analysis or a related discipline

This position is eligible for overtime and is non-represented. It is classified as an Intern.
