City of Richmond Mayor's Fellows Program - Department of Public Utilities Workforce Development Intern

The City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities (DPU), Human Capital Services Division, is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual for the position of Workforce Development Intern. This temporary internship provides hands-on experience supporting workforce development initiatives that strengthen employee learning and organizational capacity. The intern will perform duties under general supervision while collaborating closely with Human Capital Services team members.

 

Duties include but are not limited to

 

The Workforce Development Intern will assist with organizing, maintaining, and analyzing training and development data to support reporting and decision-making. They will work with Microsoft Excel and the department’s Learning Management System (LMS) to manage training records, track participation and attendance, and ensure data is accurate and accessible.

The intern will support the coordination of training programs by assisting with registrations, preparing materials, maintaining rosters, and supporting day-of training logistics.

Key Initiatives and Projects:

During the 10-week appointment, the Workforce Development Intern will support several workforce development initiatives, including:

  • DPU Training Classes and Learning Programs: Joining and contributing to team meetings that plan upcoming initiatives, assisting with logistics, and supporting preparation and tracking for departmental trainings.
  • DPU Learning Plans and Certification Tracking: Compiling training data, updating learning plan documents, and maintaining records of certification completion to ensure accurate employee learning records.

Learning Opportunities:

The intern will have opportunities to shadow Human Capital Services team members, meet with various teams across DPU, and gain exposure to workforce development operations. They will also learn about the skills and certifications required to support staff in the public utilities sector, as well as training program management and data-driven decision-making in a municipal environment.

 

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

To be considered for an internship in this program, applicants must adhere to the following criteria:

  • The student must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program, be in good academic standing (as defined below), and be registered for courses during the internship period. Summer Interns do not have to be enrolled in summer school but must be enrolled for the upcoming Fall semester.
  • Be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student, a graduate student, or a recent graduate of an undergraduate degree program from a four-year institution in good academic standing (within the last 6 months
  • After graduating from a degree program, the student no longer qualifies for an internship with this program unless they have been accepted into a graduate program which is scheduled to begin within twelve (12) months of the hire date. 
  • Students must provide a college transcript and approval from the Academic Advisor or Career Development Counselor prior to the interview date.
  • Students must be lawfully authorized to work in the United States and are required to present proof of such eligibility prior to beginning work.
  • Undergraduate students must have completed 60 credit hours and have a 2.5 overall grade point average.
  • Graduate students must be enrolled at an accredited institution and have a 3.0 overall grade point average. 
  • No special certification or license is required.
