Quality Lab Technician

 Quality Lab Technician

Summary 

The Lab Technician reports to the Quality Manager and is responsible for ensuring incoming materials meet customer specifications through mechanical and chemical testing. 

Major Areas of Responsibility 

  • Conduct appropriate part sample testing
  • Communicate with vendors to troubleshoot equipment
  • Record and analyze data 

Specific Responsibilities of the Job 

  • Setting up and running hardness testing, dimensional testing and nondestructive test (MPI)
  • Record, report and gage test samples
  • Prepare and provide documentation of test results 
  • Cut-up of test samples with Disk saw 
  • Troubleshoot testing equipment; perform mechanical and electrical work on equipment if necessary
  • Assist with urgent testing needs for the production line 
  • Run product tests as a result of field failures to determine root cause and need for investigation
  • Determine grain sizing of specimens
  • Enter data in database and devise necessary charts and reports

  • Process testing in timely and efficient manner
  • Perform appropriate tests 
  • Provide accurate root cause analysis on field failures 

Essential Functions  

  • Proficient in English Language
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team
  • Understand testing procedures  

Qualifications

  • Education/Credentials/Certifications
    • Associate’s Degree in related field Required  *OR*
    • 5 years in a quality role in a manufacturing environment
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or other technical curriculum Preferred
  • Length of Experience 
    • 2 years product testing experience preferred
    • Manufacturing experience preferred
    • MPI (Magnetic Partical Inspection) certification preferred
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities 
    • Understanding of customer specifications
    • Knowledge of blueprint reading
    • Knowledge of ASTM standards 
    • Excellent oral and written language ability 
    • Intermediate mathematical ability (ratios/proportions, statistics, some calculus)
    • Excellent problem solving and reasoning ability 
    • Basic understanding of chemistry foundations and symbols
    • Ability to multi-task
    • Ability to perform under stress 
    • Manual skills such as those necessary for maintaining machines and operating testing equipment 
    • Ability to operate testing equipment such as Spectrometer, micrometers, microscopes, and hand tools
    • Excellent interpersonal skills 
    • Ability to follow testing procedures 
    • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite Applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook)
