Records Management & HIPAA Compliance Project Intern
Project Description:
The Records Management & HIPAA Compliance program supports more than 50 agency programs by ensuring accurate records retention, secure destruction, and proper archiving in accordance with state and federal regulations. Interns will gain hands-on experience in regulatory compliance by organizing and archiving records, conducting HIPAA-related audits in the electronic patient record system, and assisting in the development of standard operating procedures. This internship provides direct exposure to compliance and regulatory practices that promote operational transparency and protect patient information.
Goals/Objectives of Project:
- Learn the key principles of Records Management for Public Health Departments, including retention, archiving, and secure destruction in accordance with state regulations.
- Learn the core HIPAA requirements and proper handling of protected health information.
- Gain practical experience auditing electronic patient records for compliance.
- Learn cross-functional relationship management skills.
- Learn process mapping, process documentation, workflow development and procedure writing.
Required Skills:
- Strong attention to detail when organizing, reviewing, or entering information
- Ability to learn and use database or records management software
- Ability to follow established procedures for handling confidential or sensitive information
- Interest in learning about records retention laws, public records processes, and compliance requirements
- Willingness to assist with physical tasks such as moving boxes and organizing files.
Preferred Skills:
- Coursework or academic interest in healthcare administration, public administration, and/or public health policy
- Exposure to data entry, database systems, or digital records tools
- Understanding of privacy regulations such as HIPAA (even at a basic or classroom level)
- Experience working on team projects or supporting administrative functions
- Interest in archival work, historical records, or information governance
