IT Student Intern
Position Summary:
The United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia is looking to fill IT Student Intern positions in the Shared Administrative Services Information Technology and Automation department, which supports the district court clerk’s office, chambers, and probation office of the Southern District of West Virginia. This is an exciting opportunity to obtain real-world federal IT experience, including hands-on experience with courtroom technology, end-user support, security operations, and automation in secure and regulated environments. The intern will be provided with a meaningful employment experience. We are looking for students interested in developing professionally and fully engaged in a mentorship with forward-thinking, experienced IT professionals.
The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia has points of holding court located in Beckley, Bluefield, and Huntington, with the main office located in Charleston, West Virginia. The court is comprised of over 100 employees, who support five active Article III judges, one senior Article III judge, and three full-time magistrate judges. We are part of the judicial branch, one of the three separate branches of the federal government. While most of the work will be completed in the Charleston office, travel to divisional offices may be required at times.
Representative Duties:
- Monitor and assist with helpdesk calls and tickets.
- Test newly purchased IT equipment for proper operation prior to relocating to secure storage. Assist with the organization of the IT staging facility, including testing and cleanup of used equipment and identification of equipment for disposal. Sort, label and organize data, power and other miscellaneous cables.
- Assist with the installation, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of courtroom audio/visual technology.
- Assist with the installation of IT infrastructure, including network data switches, data cabling, UPS units, and server room and data closet cable management.
- Assist in developing IT documentation for end users, as well as for internal IT department use only.
- Assist with the rollout and replacement of IT equipment and peripherals for end users and network infrastructure support.
- Provide in-person, hands-on assistance to end users with court technology, including mobile devices such as laptops, iPhones and iPads. Back-up and upgrade iOS on court-issued Apple devices.
- Shadow IT staff members to become familiar with the wide variety of duties within the department and gain knowledge of the technologies used in the court.
- Occasional travel to other divisions may be required.
- Occasional lifting will be required.
- Increasing levels of responsibility and duties will be assigned based upon demonstrated abilities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
To qualify for the position, a person must be a high school graduate or equivalent and be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program (junior or senior status preferred) and currently pursuing an information technology related major (computer science, software engineering, programming, web development, IT security, etc.). Additionally, the candidate must have:
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate technical issues and solutions to non-technical court personnel;
- Skill in using technology, including proficiency in Microsoft 365 and Windows 10/11;
- Knowledge of local area networks and basic network troubleshooting;
- Ability to follow instructions, maintain confidentiality, demonstrate sound ethics and judgment, handle sensitive information and demonstrate discretion at all times; and
- Professional and positive demeanor appropriate for a court environment.

Judiciary employees serve under excepted appointments (not civil service) and are “at-will” employees.
