Internal Automation Intern, Voice Systems

JOB DESCRIPTION

Internal Automation Intern

About Presto Phoenix, Inc.

Presto is the leading Voice AI company for restaurant drive-thrus, operating at scale in complex, noisy, customer-facing environments. As the AI partner to more than a dozen of the most iconic American restaurant brands, Presto is building one of the most impactful real-world applications of AI that directly impacts revenue, labor efficiency, and a magical guest experience for millions of people.

AI is not a feature at Presto; it is the foundation of how we build, evaluate, and evolve our products. We operate at lightning-speed iteration cycles and are solving some of the hardest problems in Voice AI. We are backed by Remus Capital, were a Y Combinator company, and are headquartered in Silicon Valley.

This may not be the right fit for you if you are looking for a traditional 9-to-5 environment. We move at the pace of AI. Change is constant, and roadmaps evolve quickly. Presto is for builders, experimenters, and problem-solvers who thrive in ambiguity, learn continuously, and are excited to shape the future of real-world AI alongside a high-performance team.

The Role

We are looking for an Internal Automation Intern to add capacity to Presto's Automation team and help us work through a backlog of internal automation opportunities that is bigger than our current bandwidth.

Presto runs a company-wide effort to automate its own internal operations, taking manual, repetitive work off teams across the business and turning it into reliable, self-serve automation. This is internal tooling and process automation, distinct from the voice AI we build for our customers. Demand for that work outpaces what the team can ship today, and this role exists to help close that gap, giving the Automation team additional hands to move more automations from backlog to live, and to do it faster.

You will work as part of the Automation team, reporting to our Head of Internal Automation, who will point you at prioritized work across functions like operations, analytics, people, and revenue. The team has already mapped a large backlog of internal automation opportunities, so you will not start from a blank page or be expected to find all of your own work; most of what you build is already defined and waiting. You will spend most of your time in Claude Code, building scripts, reusable skills, and agentic workflows that run analyses, generate documents, update systems of record, and move data between our internal tools.

This is a hands-on building role. The opportunities are largely defined; your job is to write the code, test it against real inputs, and stand up the automations that take the work off someone's plate for good. As you ramp, you can help refine and scope backlog items and flag new ones you spot, but sourcing your own work is not the core of the role.

This role demands attention to detail. An automation that quietly produces a wrong number or drops a record is worse than the manual task it replaced, because people stop checking it. You will be expected to validate your own output, build in checks, and hold a high quality bar on everything you ship.

You will also be expected to leverage AI tools as a core part of your daily work, using them to move faster on building, testing, and documentation, and continuously finding smarter ways to deliver reliable results.

What You'll Do

Add Capacity to the Automation Team

  • Take on automation work from the team's backlog and move it from scoped to shipped
  • Partner with the Head of Internal Automation and functional teams to understand priorities and unblock yourself quickly
  • Help work through the team's queue across functions like operations, analytics, people, and revenue
  • As you ramp, help refine and scope items already in the backlog so they are ready to build, and flag new opportunities you spot along the way

Build with Claude Code

  • Build scripts, reusable skills, and agentic workflows in Claude Code that teammates can run themselves
  • Write clean, readable Python, using JSON for configuration and data
  • Automate recurring deliverables such as reports, dashboards, slide decks, and documents generated from structured data
  • Turn one-off analyses into repeatable, parameterized tools anyone can re-run

Connect and Maintain Internal Tools

  • Wire together internal data sources and systems through APIs, the command line, and lightweight scripts
  • Build in validation and checks so automations fail loudly rather than producing silent errors
  • Test, maintain, and improve what you build so it keeps working as inputs and requirements change

Document and Hand Off

  • Write clear instructions so each automation can be adopted and run by the team that needs it
  • Hand off cleanly so the work outlasts your internship
  • Communicate progress and findings clearly to both technical and non-technical teammates

What We're Looking For

  • Hands-on proficiency with Claude Code, with the ability to drive it to write, run, and debug code and to build reusable skills and workflows (required)
  • Working knowledge of Python, with comfort reading and writing scripts. We use JSON for configuration and data
  • Comfort with the fundamentals: APIs, the command line, and the basics of Git
  • A strong data sense, with the ability to manipulate CSVs and spreadsheets and sanity-check your own output
  • Self-direction and resourcefulness, with the ability to take a piece of work and run with it without much hand-holding
  • A collaborative, low-ego working style, with the ability to take direction and communicate proactively when blocked
  • Exceptional attention to detail, with a track record of catching errors others miss
  • A genuine interest in an AI-native workflow and how large language models are changing knowledge work
  • Excellent written communication, with the ability to document what you build so others can use it
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in computer science, engineering, data, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated project experience
  • Comfort operating independently in a fast-paced, ambiguous, remote environment

Nice to Have

  • SQL experience and familiarity with Snowflake
  • Familiarity with document and automation libraries such as pptxgenjs, python-docx, or ReportLab, or with BI tools such as Hex or Tableau
  • Exposure to front-end basics (e.g., React or Next.js) for lightweight internal tools
  • Experience with ticketing, workflow, and integration platforms (e.g., Jira, Zoho, Slack, or Zapier)
  • Experience with LLMs, conversational AI, or agent-based systems
  • Prior internship or project experience shipping automation or internal tooling

Why Presto

We move at the speed of AI. Change is constant, and iteration is rapid. This is not a traditional environment. Success requires adaptability, curiosity, and a willingness to solve problems in real time.

This is a rare internship. Instead of a side project that gets shelved, you will ship internal automations that teams across Presto depend on, at a company that automates the real world for a living. You will see the work you build adopted across the company, and you will leave with a portfolio of tools in active use.

You will work as part of a small Automation team and alongside functions across the company, learning how a high-growth AI company actually runs and where AI tooling is changing how work gets done.

Compensation and Logistics

This is a full-time internship with a flexible duration, running from now through the end of 2026.

The role is remote, with the option to work a hybrid schedule from Presto's office in San Mateo, California where applicable.

The U.S. pay range for this position is approximately $15 to $18 per hour. Compensation is determined by location and individual experience.

Our Commitment

We value people from all walks of life and are committed to building an inclusive and equitable work environment. We strongly encourage candidates from historically underrepresented backgrounds to apply.

Presto is an equal opportunity employer. If you need an accommodation to access the application or interview process, please contact recruiting@presto.com.
