Special Education Teacher

Special Education Teacher | Boston, MA

Experience Level: Newly Certified to Experienced — New Graduates Welcome About Propel Clinical

Propel Clinical is a healthcare and education staffing organization founded in partnership with a leading academic health system. We place credentialed clinicians and educators across multiple states and school markets, partnering with public school districts, charter networks, and specialized programs to fill roles that matter. Our mission is simple: help educators and clinicians step into the roles they actually want, and lift up the next generation coming behind them.

Teaching is hard enough. The training is long, the days are heavy, and too many talented educators end up somewhere that just doesn't fit. We're the partner that clears the friction — licensure paperwork, credentialing, logistics — so your energy goes where it should: the students who need you. We treat the people we place like professionals, not line items on an invoice.

Today, that mission includes bringing dedicated special education teachers into K–12 schools, where the need is urgent and the impact is real. Whether you're an established educator chasing the right fit or an aspiring one building toward it, we're in your corner — because the work is hard enough already. You deserve to do it with a great company.

What We Offer

  • One recruiter, start to finish. The person who calls you first is the person you'll text in October when something comes up. No handoffs from a hunter to an account manager to a "care team."
  • Direct line to the account lead. If your IEP or ARD schedule breaks, your paycheck is off, or your campus placement isn't fitting, you have the cell of the person who signed your district's contract. Not a ticket queue.
  • You're not one of hundreds. Big agencies float dozens of SPED teachers against the same opening. We work a smaller bench on purpose — so when we call, it's because the role fits your certification, your commute, and your grade preference. Not because you're the next name in a mass send.
  • Long-term placements built around the academic calendar — not a substitute pool, not day-to-day churn.
  • Credentialing and onboarding support — we help you navigate state licensure verification, fingerprinting, and district paperwork so your first day is spent with students.

Position Summary

The Special Education Teacher provides direct instruction, assessment, and case management for students with disabilities across the K–12 setting. The teacher collaborates with general education staff, related service providers, families, and administrators to develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) — including participation in the ARD (Admission, Review, and Dismissal) committee process in Texas — supporting student achievement, access to the general curriculum, and successful transition planning.

  • Provide direct specialized instruction to students with disabilities in inclusion, resource, self-contained, or specialized program settings, as assigned.
  • Design and deliver differentiated lesson plans aligned to state academic standards (Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks or Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, as applicable) and each student's IEP goals.
  • Conduct formal and informal assessments; complete present-level statements (PLAAFP or equivalent), progress reports, and required documentation on schedule.
  • Serve as an IEP team facilitator, ARD committee facilitator, or participating teacher for annual reviews, reevaluations, and initial evaluations, as directed by the district.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and administrators to support student access and success.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, IEP or ARD amendments, and behavioral or academic concerns.
  • Support the implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), positive behavior supports, and de-escalation strategies as needed.
  • Maintain compliance with federal law (IDEA, Section 504, FERPA) and applicable state special education regulations, including procedural timelines and consent requirements.
  • Attend staff meetings, IEP or ARD meetings, professional development, and other required school functions.

Qualifications Required

All candidates, regardless of location:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; Master's preferred.
  • Current fingerprinting and criminal background clearance in the state of employment, or willingness to complete prior to start.
  • Working knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, FERPA, and the special education regulations of the state in which the assignment is located.
  • Compliance with all applicable state and local requirements, including educator licensure and endorsement rules, required examinations, mandated reporter training, and any state-specific onboarding requirements.
  • Ability to maintain licensure in good standing throughout the term of the assignment, including timely completion of continuing education, license renewals, and any state-required professional development.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Valid Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) license as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK–8 or 5–12) or Teacher of Students with Severe Disabilities (All Levels), Initial or Professional.
  • Passing scores on required Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL), including Communication and Literacy Skills and, where applicable, Foundations of Reading and subject-matter tests.
  • Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) endorsement, or willingness to obtain within the timeframe required by the assigned district.
  • Working knowledge of Massachusetts special education regulations (603 CMR 28.00).

Preferred

  • Additional endorsements or dual certification (elementary, secondary content, ESL/bilingual, reading, or severe disabilities).
  • In Texas: Core Subjects EC–6 or 4–8, or Generalist certification, in addition to Special Education EC–12.
  • Prior experience developing and implementing IEPs in a public school setting.
  • Experience with co-teaching, inclusion models, or specialized programs (ABA-based, therapeutic, language-based, life-skills, or behavior support).
  • CPI, Safety-Care, or similar de-escalation certification.
  • Experience with IEP management platforms (e.g., Frontline, PowerSchool Special Programs, eSped, SuccessEd, IEP Direct).
  • Bilingual candidates (English/Spanish) encouraged to apply.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to design and deliver specially designed instruction across a range of disability categories and grade levels.
  • Ability to write measurable, standards-aligned IEP goals and progress-monitor effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage a caseload, maintain accurate records, and meet state and federal compliance timelines.
  • Commitment to supporting diverse student needs and promoting educational equity.

  • Requires frequent interaction with students, staff, families, and community partners.
  • May involve travel between school sites or campuses within a district.
  • May involve exposure to student behaviors requiring physical intervention or de-escalation, depending on assignment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move throughout school buildings and classrooms.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift materials typically associated with educational settings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and families.
  • Ability to implement approved physical intervention or restraint techniques where required by student IEPs or BIPs, following district and state guidelines.
