ABOUT PROJECT GUARDIAN

Project Guardian is a Kenya-centered infrastructure pilot and fundability initiative. The project examines how infrastructure, institutional capacity, public policy, community needs, financing, risk, and implementation systems may be integrated into a credible development framework.

Project Guardian remains a planning, research, and program-development initiative. Internship work does not constitute licensed engineering, land surveying, legal advice, investment advice, government representation, or authorization to make commitments on behalf of the company or any external organization.

POSITION SUMMARY

The GIS & Infrastructure Visualization Analyst Intern will support the responsible use of geographic information, spatial analysis, cartography, and infrastructure visualization within Project Guardian.

The participant may help organize authorized geospatial datasets, prepare reference maps, examine geographic relationships, document spatial assumptions, and communicate infrastructure concepts through clear and appropriately qualified visual materials.

This is an educational analyst position. The participant will work under supervision and will not independently conduct licensed surveying, certify geographic boundaries, approve infrastructure locations, issue engineering conclusions, or represent preliminary visualizations as construction-ready or government-authorized plans.

Expected commitment: Normally 5–10 hours per week
Holiday pause: December 19, 2026–January 3, 2027; no routine work is expected
Priority application deadline: October 2, 2026

Work exceeding 10 hours in a week requires advance written approval and ordinarily should not exceed approximately 15 hours. The internship does not create a promise or expectation of future employment.

EDUCATIONAL STRUCTURE

This is a structured, project-based learning experience. Participants receive defined learning objectives, supervised assignments, written feedback, revision opportunities, and exposure to multidisciplinary infrastructure, policy, research, and program-management work.

Participants will produce portfolio-appropriate work subject to confidentiality, data-security, attribution, and release requirements.

Academic credit may be available only when approved by the participant’s institution. Participants are responsible for initiating their institution’s credit process, and Morsby, Gorman, McCarthy LLC will reasonably cooperate with required documentation and evaluations. Academic credit is not guaranteed and is not required to participate.

ROLE PURPOSE

The purpose of this internship is to help the participant develop practical experience translating authorized geographic and infrastructure information into clear, accurate, accessible, and decision-useful visual materials.

The intern will learn how spatial information can support multidisciplinary planning while recognizing the limitations of available data, the difference between conceptual analysis and professional certification, and the ethical risks associated with sensitive geographic information.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the internship, the participant should be better able to:

Identify appropriate uses and limitations of geographic information systems in early-stage infrastructure planning.

Locate, evaluate, organize, and document authorized geospatial data from credible sources.

Distinguish observed data, modeled information, assumptions, estimates, and illustrative concepts.

Apply basic spatial-analysis and cartographic principles.

Create maps and infrastructure visualizations with appropriate titles, legends, scales, labels, source notes, dates, and disclaimers.

Assess coordinate systems, geographic coverage, resolution, completeness, and compatibility at an introductory or intermediate level.

Communicate uncertainty, missing data, and geographic limitations clearly.

Protect sensitive, restricted, personal, culturally significant, or security-relevant location information.

Incorporate written supervisory feedback and maintain transparent revision records.

Explain spatial findings to multidisciplinary audiences without overstating what the evidence establishes.

POTENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Assignments may include:

Compiling an inventory of approved geographic datasets relevant to Project Guardian.

Recording dataset sources, dates, geographic coverage, licensing conditions, update frequency, resolution, and known limitations.

Cleaning, standardizing, and organizing authorized spatial files under supervision.

Supporting the development of preliminary maps showing infrastructure systems, service areas, administrative geography, environmental context, accessibility, or other approved project themes.

Comparing geographic patterns across authorized datasets.

Assisting with proximity, accessibility, coverage, network, or location-based analysis where methodologically appropriate.

Preparing conceptual infrastructure diagrams and geographic overlays.

Supporting scenario-based visualizations while clearly labeling assumptions.

Creating map layouts suitable for internal briefs, presentations, reports, and supervised stakeholder materials.

Developing consistent cartographic conventions, symbology, legends, labels, and source notes.

Checking maps for missing citations, unclear scales, distorted projections, unsupported precision, misleading color choices, or accessibility concerns.

Maintaining a spatial-data register or metadata log.

Documenting analytical steps so that another team member can understand and reproduce the work.

Reviewing visual materials for internal consistency with research, policy, engineering, financial, and program-management workstreams.

Revising deliverables in response to written and verbal feedback.

Contributing to final learning reflections and approved portfolio documentation.

Assignments will be calibrated to the participant’s experience. A participant may work with introductory tools and guided templates or undertake more advanced analysis when supported by demonstrated capability and appropriate supervision.

POSSIBLE EDUCATIONAL OUTPUTS

Depending on project needs and data availability, supervised outputs may include:

A geospatial source and metadata inventory.

One or more preliminary reference maps.

Infrastructure-system or service-area visualizations.

A spatial assumptions and limitations memorandum.

A cartographic style guide or map-production checklist.

A data-quality or geographic-gap assessment.

A reproducibility note describing sources and analytical steps.

A revised final visualization package.

A reflective memorandum describing methods learned, limitations encountered, feedback received, and revisions completed.

All outputs are preliminary unless expressly approved otherwise in writing.

SUPERVISION, FEEDBACK, AND REVISION

The participant will receive:

An initial orientation to the project, role boundaries, confidentiality expectations, and approved tools.

Defined assignments with intended learning outcomes.

Access to relevant project materials on a need-to-know basis.

A designated supervisor or project lead.

Periodic check-ins appropriate to the assignment.

Written or documented feedback on substantive work.

Reasonable opportunities to revise selected deliverables.

A concluding assessment or learning review when required by the program or an approved academic-credit arrangement.

The participant is expected to communicate capacity constraints, methodological uncertainty, missing information, and technical problems promptly.

Recognition and communication of data limitations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants may be pursuing or have completed education in fields such as:

Geographic information science or GIS.

Geography or geospatial analysis.

Urban or regional planning.

Civil, environmental, transportation, or infrastructure engineering.

Environmental studies or environmental science.

Data science or information systems.

Architecture, landscape architecture, or design.

Public policy, public administration, or international development.

A related interdisciplinary field.

Helpful experience may include:

Exposure to QGIS, ArcGIS, Google Earth, Mapbox, or comparable geospatial tools.

Familiarity with spreadsheets, tabular data, and data cleaning.

Basic knowledge of coordinate systems, spatial formats, layers, or metadata.

Experience creating maps, diagrams, site-context graphics, or infrastructure visualizations.

Careful research, writing, citation, and file-management practices.

Interest in infrastructure, public policy, international development, or Kenya-centered research.

Applicants are not expected to possess every listed qualification. Demonstrated curiosity, careful reasoning, willingness to learn, and respect for methodological limits are important.

DATA, MAPPING, AND LOCATION-SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

The participant must:

Use only public, licensed, company-provided, or otherwise authorized data.

Follow applicable dataset licenses, attribution requirements, and usage restrictions.

Avoid collecting, inferring, publishing, or distributing sensitive location information without express authorization.

Avoid representing approximate coordinates, modeled locations, or illustrative boundaries as verified facts.

Clearly label preliminary, conceptual, estimated, or incomplete information.

Avoid publishing personal addresses, precise locations of vulnerable populations, restricted facilities, security-sensitive assets, or culturally sensitive sites.

Escalate uncertainty concerning data ownership, licensing, privacy, security, or appropriate disclosure.

Follow all company instructions concerning storage, access, transmission, retention, and deletion of project information.

No field data collection, drone operation, land surveying, direct community mapping, interviews, or human-subject research may be undertaken unless separately authorized and appropriately supervised.

PROFESSIONAL AND TECHNICAL LIMITS

Internship materials may support internal learning and preliminary planning, but they may not be presented as:

Licensed land surveys.

Cadastral or legally controlling boundary determinations.

Construction drawings.

Engineering certifications.

Environmental approvals.

Government-authorized maps.

Emergency-response instructions.

Final siting decisions.

Legal, regulatory, or investment advice.

Any work requiring professional licensure, official validation, or regulatory approval must be reviewed and completed by appropriately qualified professionals.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND AUTOMATED TOOLS

The participant may use approved digital or artificial-intelligence tools only in accordance with supervisory instructions and applicable confidentiality requirements.

AI-generated analysis, labels, code, citations, geographic claims, or visual elements must not be treated as verified. The participant remains responsible for checking sources, documenting material tool use, identifying uncertainty, and protecting confidential or restricted information.

Confidential, personal, proprietary, or sensitive geographic information may not be entered into an unapproved external system.

CONFIDENTIALITY, OWNERSHIP, AND PORTFOLIO USE

Participants may receive access to confidential, proprietary, pre-decisional, or restricted information. Access will be limited according to role and project need.

Work created within the internship may be subject to confidentiality, intellectual-property, attribution, and data-license requirements. Participants may not independently publish, distribute, reuse, or present project materials.

Portfolio use may be permitted only after prior written authorization and may require redaction, aggregation, modification, delayed release, or the use of a separately approved public version.

APPLICATION MATERIALS

A current resume.

A cover letter explaining their interest in GIS, infrastructure visualization, and the Project Guardian learning experience.

One relevant work sample, if available.

A work sample may include a map, spatial-analysis exercise, planning graphic, infrastructure diagram, data visualization, technical memorandum, academic project, or comparable material. Applicants may redact confidential information.

Applicants without a formal GIS portfolio may submit relevant academic or independent work demonstrating analytical, geographic, visual, or technical reasoning.

Any application exercise will be limited in scope, used only for candidate evaluation, and will not be used as uncompensated production work.

SELECTION PROCESS

Initial review may be conducted asynchronously based on submitted application materials. Finalists may be invited to a limited interview or asked for clarification concerning their experience, availability, learning goals, or work sample.
