Economic Development Research Intern
Huntington Analytics is a Huntington data and AI company, and much of our work is about this region: which services southern West Virginia families travel to Huntington and Charleston for, what it costs to live in each county, and how local small businesses grow. We need a student who wants to get the facts right about southern West Virginia. That’s this role.
As our Economic Development Research Intern, you’ll:
→ Research one southern WV topic or county at a time and write a short brief: every number with its source and date, and anything unknown marked as unknown
→ Help report the results of our grant-funded AI pilot with local small businesses in the terms funders use, such as jobs and economic impact
→ Gather public data from sources like the Census Bureau, BLS and FRED, and keep it organized
→ Keep a list of grants and economic development opportunities for the founder to review
→ Write a one-page southern WV brief each month
What we’re looking for:
→ Interest in West Virginia, Appalachia and how regional economies work
→ Careful with sources and comfortable with spreadsheets; GIS or mapping is a plus
→ Clear, plain writing
How we work: you research and draft, and nothing is published or sent to an agency or official without the founder’s approval. This is a paid, part-time W-2 position.
Good fit for economics, geography/GIS, public administration & policy, political science, sociology or MPA students. Internship credit may be available through your department. Paid at $15/hour for about 10 hours a week, scheduled around your classes, hybrid in Huntington or remote within West Virginia.
