Generator Modeling Data Verification Engineer Co-op (On-Site)

PJM Interconnection is a regional transmission organization (RTO) that plays a vital role in the U.S. electric system. PJM ensures the reliability of the largest centrally dispatched control area in North America by coordinating the movement of electricity in all or parts of 13 states. PJM, acting neutrally and independently, operates the largest competitive wholesale electricity market in the world. PJM manages a sophisticated regional planning process for generation and transmission expansion to assure future electric.

DEPARTMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Generator Modeling & Dynamic Studies (GMDS) department is responsible for developing, maintaining, and validating the dynamic models used to evaluate the reliability and performance of the PJM bulk electric system. The department supports system planning, operations, interconnection studies, and compliance activities by analyzing the behavior of generators, inverter-based resources, large computational load facilities, and other dynamic system components during both normal and disturbed system conditions.  We collaborate with new generation interconnection departments to properly model new generation in PJM and industry modeling cases.  We collaborate with Generation Owners to assure all modeling data are accurate.

Key responsibilities include:
* Reviewing and maintaining generator, inverter-based resource, and large computational load models.
* Performing dynamic stability and electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies.
* Supporting NERC reliability standards, including MOD-026, MOD-032, and MOD-033 model verification and validation activities.
* Investigating power system disturbances and comparing actual equipment performance against expected model behavior.
* Supporting PJM's integration of emerging technologies, including inverter-based resources, battery energy storage systems, and large computational loads.
* Developing analytical tools, automation solutions, and advanced data analytics capabilities to improve engineering efficiency and model quality.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The co-op will support PJM's Generator Modeling & Dynamic Studies (GMDS) department through the development of automated data processing, reporting, and engineering analysis tools.
Responsibilities include extracting and organizing data from technical reports and engineering documents, developing Python-based workflows to improve efficiency, supporting dynamic model verification and validation activities, and assisting with the analysis of power system performance data.

Specific projects may include:

*  Developing tools to extract and organize information from customer-submitted reports and PDF documents.
*  Supporting department's implementation of North American Electric Reliability Council's compliance standards for generator model verification and validation processes (MOD-026, 32, 33).
* Assisting with the automated preparation of engineering reports and datasets.
* Organizing system disturbance event data and generator performance records.
* Supporting generation mapping, power flow, and short-circuit data management activities.
* Evaluating opportunities to apply Artificial Intelligence and automation techniques to engineering workflows.
* Assisting department engineers with data management, quality assurance, and process improvement initiatives.

This position is designed as a learning and development opportunity. While the department works on advanced topics such as power system modeling, dynamic studies, automation, and data analytics, co-op assignments are tailored to each student's education level, technical background, and demonstrated capabilities. Successful candidates are not expected to have prior experience in all areas described. We provide mentorship and progressively challenging assignments that enable students to build technical skills while gaining exposure to real-world reliability and power system engineering challenges. Most importantly, the work performed by our co-ops directly supports PJM initiatives and contributes to projects that have a meaningful impact on grid reliability.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

The successful candidate:
* Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Be self-motivated, resourceful, and capable of working independently on assigned projects.
* Demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
* Be detail-oriented with a focus on data quality and accuracy.
* Have basic programming experience, preferably in Python.
* Have the ability to organize, clean, and analyze large datasets.
* Be comfortable learning new software applications and technical processes.
* Possess strong time management and organizational skills.
* Be able to interpret technical reports and engineering documentation.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

The successful candidate should have experience with:
* Python programming, including libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, and OpenPyXL.
* Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
* Data extraction and processing of information contained in PDF documents.
* Data visualization and reporting tools.
* Databases and structured data management.
* Automation and process improvement projects.
* Applying Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for document processing, data extraction, and workflow automation.
* Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or mapping applications.
* Engineering data analysis and technical report preparation.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS SESSION RUNS FROM MARCH 29, 2027 UNTIL  AUGUST 20, 207. IF YOU CANNOT COMMIT TO EMPLOYMENT FOR THE SESSION IN ITS ENTIRETY AND/OR NEED TO END THE SESSION EARLIER THAN THE END DATE OF  AUGUST 20, 2027, PLEASE DO NOT APPLY.

All PJM Interconnection co-op positions are contracted for 40 hours per week. If you are not able to make this time commitment please do not apply.

PJM’s uses a third party vendor to hire student workers. If you are hired for this position, Yoh Enterprise Solutions will be your employer and should be the only employer listed on your I-20, if hired. Employment for this position requires authorization to work in the U.S. for the full duration of the co-op cycle from the established start and end date as stated in this position description.

PJM will not be providing Housing/Transportation assistance, the successful candidate must be able to come on-campus when needed. PJM/Yoh Enterprise Solutions does not offer relocation for contracted positions such as the co-op however candidates may elect to relocate at their own expense in order to meet the onsite requirements for the role.
