Asst Director/Nurse Mgr – Long Term Care
Summary of Major Functions
The Nurse Manager is a Registered Professional Nurse who is responsible for the organization and administration of either the Skilled 24 bed unit or 48 bed Long Term Care unit.
Essential Functions and Work Role Responsibilities
1.Consults with and advises/informs the DNS concerning resident care and administrative issues. Keeps the DNS informed of unit activities.
2.Assists the DNS as assigned and directed in administration of all aspects of the nursing department.
3.Gives counsel and guidance to Charge Nurse concerning unit management and resident care.
4.Participates in actual resident care when the situation requires.
5.Promotes good internal and interdepartmental relations and public relations.
6.Investigates new products, equipment, and techniques as directed and makes recommendations.
7.Monitors staffing schedules and provides for emergency coverage.
8.Assists in establishing lines of authority and responsibility for defining the duties of nursing service personnel, consistent with good administrative practices to ensure that department objectives are met.
9.Ensures compliance with established state, and federal regulations.
10.Works closely with other Administrative Nurses to ensure management coverage as well as effective implementation of administrative decisions.
11.Plans, implements, evaluates employee orientation program.
12.Performs other duties as assigned by the Administrator or Director of Nursing.
13.Facilitates UR meetings and keeps minutes.
14.Reviews regularly all high risk areas/processes (such as medication ordering, receiving, administering, securing, reconciling medications including narcotics).
15.Periodically reviews all policies and procedures and job descriptions, etc. and makes recommendations for revisions.
16.Required participation in Leadership Development Institute (LDI) Individual Development Plan (IDP) and Leader Evaluation Manager (LEM)
Exposed to all resident elements including exposure to blood/body fluids and other unpleasant elements. At times, long and irregular hours are necessary. Exposure to hazardous substances is, at times, unavoidable. Frequently, multiple tasks and resident needs must be addressed in a rapid fashion by prioritizing life-threatening situations and organizing the remainder of the needs
Work involves standing and/or walking 60% of the time. There is occasional moderate physical effort required in assisting other nursing staff in meeting resident care needs. Vision and hearing acuteness is required at all times. Occasional lifting, bending, squatting, and stooping may be necessary. The incumbent is subject to frustration and fatigue.
Occupational injuries may occur from not following policies and procedures regarding 1) exposure to hazardous materials including blood and body fluids; and 2) potential injuries from sharp objects, violent individuals, and physical environment.
- Ensure that the department environment is free from recognized hazards that create a risk of injury to healthcare workers, patients, and/or visitors.
- Support and facilitate open & non-punitive communication between healthcare workers, patients, and families regarding clinical and environmental safety on their unit and when interfacing with other units, groups, and individuals.
- Support and facilitate employee and non-employee healthcare workers in reporting and directly addressing patient and environmental safety concerns.
Probability and Consequences of Errors
Errors in practice can result in negative resident outcome. Probability is contingent upon individual practice. Poor performance will be addressed according to established progressive disciplinary policies and procedures of the facility and Maine State Law.
This is a Nursing Administrative Position. All nursing personnel on assigned units are under the supervision of the Nurse Manager.
Minimum Requirements for the Position
Good physical and mental health. Prior healthcare experience in either a clinical or administrative capacity. Ability to work well with others and to function independently and without supervision. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing. Must hold a Current, valid Maine Nursing License
Must have, as a minimum, one year of experience as a nursing supervisor in a hospital or long-term care facility.
