Program & Performance Improvement Fellowship

CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is currently available with the Program and Performance Improvement Office, Office of the Director, National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Improvement Office works with colleagues in every Division and Office within NCHHSTP to evaluate and enhance the efficiency, outcomes, and impact of NCHHSTP programs, policies, and activities. This work focuses on (1) improving data use for program improvement, (2) maximizing opportunities in healthcare systems, (3) enhancing health department focus on program collaboration and service integration, and (4) strengthening modeling and cross-cutting analyses to identify and implement high-impact prevention to reduce HIV, viral hepatitis, STDs and TB.
Research Project: The Improvement Office is expanding the activities around data use to improve public health and health care performance and maximizing opportunities in healthcare systems. The participant will contribute to activities to ensure data are used to monitor, evaluate and improve the efficiency, outcomes, and impact of programs, policies, and activities by collaborating with Divisions to develop routine national, state, and recipient feedback reports and assisting with data-driven reviews. In addition, the participant will be involved in several projects aimed at supporting Center and Division efforts to evaluate and implement strategic initiatives aimed at improving access to, and delivery of, recommended prevention and treatment services HIV, Hepatitis B and C, latent TB infection, and other STDs within healthcare settings.
Opportunities may include:
- Providing support to Divisions developing progress reports to ensure that key information will be understandable by and meaningful to the range of intended user audiences, using plain language tenants and clear graphics.
- Supporting internal partners to identify, develop and maintain Division-level fact sheets reporting on the most important measures of burden, disease projections, and effectiveness of interventions as well as communication products to highlight the successes of prevention programs.
- Contributing to the evaluation and implementation of strategic initiatives and activities directed towards improving screening and care delivery for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, latent TB infection, and other STDs within healthcare settings.
- Performing statistical analyses on quantitative datasets using SAS or other statistical programs, summarizing results, and presenting findings at meetings or conferences and in peer-reviewed publications.

- Increased understanding in the application of monitoring and evaluation methods for monitoring, evaluating, and improving infectious disease prevention programs
- Improved scientific writing and synthesis of complex data for multiple audiences.
- Improved understanding and experience applying various statistical methods for quantitative datasets

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: December 2021. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program.
