CDC Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Fellowship

CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Global WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) Epidemiology team, in the Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch, Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases (DFWED), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
The Global WASH team works on global waterborne infections (e.g. cholera, typhoid) and outbreaks associated with them and improving global WASH practices across healthcare, community, and household settings in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The team is currently focusing much of its global WASH work on improving WASH to mitigate COVID-19 in countries in the Caribbean, Central America, and East Africa.
Research Project: The participant may have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:
- Managing, analyzing and interpreting data (e.g., quantitative and qualitative monitoring and evaluation data from ongoing WASH projects)
- Generating reports, presentations, and publications that examine the effectiveness of WASH interventions
- Coordinating and providing technical assistance to in-country partners and CDC country offices to improve WASH measures for COVID-19 mitigation
- Participating in cross-CDC WASH workgroups
- Additional activities will include the following: Learning program and project management by serving as a contributor in supporting the clearance of documents, and ensuring initial entries are entered into a tracking log.
Learning Objectives: The participant will receive training on research and analytical methods relevant to WASH-related monitoring and evaluation of programs in LMICs. The participant will learn epidemiologic techniques to manage, analyze and interpret data. The participant will also engage regularly with staff to learn how to effectively communicate with international partners, provide technical assistance, and present clear guidance materials, as well as write and present scientific findings from evaluations.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: November 2021. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for nine months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
