Intern - Government Relations & Public Policy (Summer 2022)

Reporting directly to the Vice President, you'll be an integral part of a team of US federal and state government relations professionals. You'll have an opportunity to research and work on the many policy issues facing technology companies. Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the course of the internship?

Participate and play an active role in US Federal strategic assignments:

  • Within the first couple weeks, you will be integrated into meetings and assigned to multiple recurring assignments.
  • By the end of the internship, you will have mastered the recurring tasks and will be leading the assignments with an ability to fully execute independently.

Be a proactive member of the team:

  • You will be successful if you are a self-starter and can effectively communicate your desire to learn more and ask how else you can help. Team members will delegate assignments to you as you ask for them. Your internship is best how you make it.
  • You will excel in this role if you bring confidence and exceptional interpersonal skills to your work conduct and product.
  • You will be expected to manage multiple projects and assignments at once, be flexible with moving parts across many time zones.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

While you will be supporting the broader Global Government Relations and Public Policy team, you will be receiving primary direction from the US federal team in Washington, DC. You will be involved in many staff and industry meetings, capturing meeting notes, and attend committee hearings on Capitol Hill, writing meeting memos. In support of our communications to internal and external audiences, you will write and prepare content for our various newsletters, infographics, and executive briefs. You will provide analysis and conduct research on policy issues surrounding technology, digital infrastructure, 5G, privacy, cybersecurity, multi-cloud, and other issues. Utilizing our multiple subscriptions and resources, you will be tasked to monitor and track industry news and related legislative developments.

There are opportunities to work on long-term, strategic projects and additional special projects as assigned.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Vice President of Global Government Relations and Public Policy, who has built his team from the ground up and has successfully and effectively executed a comprehensive government relations strategy in key markets across the globe. The Vice President’s management philosophy is about trusting the talent on our team. Interns are encouraged to explore their curiosities about our company’s work and to engage them directly in our team’s work.

You will be managed primarily by two team members: the Global Political & Operations Manager and the Global Policy Analyst. Their management philosophy is all about “teamwork.” They work actively to involve interns as core members of the team. They both value collaboration, open communication, asking any and all questions, and a desire to dig deeper into our core mission.
Broadly, the Global Government Relations and Public team is comprised of professionals across the world, in the United States, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, many with years of experience in the government and public sectors. The team is part of the Legal Department at VMware led by VMware’s General Counsel and Executive Vice President.

Where is this role located?

Fixed: this role is based in Washington, DC with some work being performed between a VMware office, home office, and Capitol Hill.
