Job Summary
The school nurse provides support to the instructional process by serving as a nurse with specific responsibility for identifying, evaluating, and providing health services for students. The school nurse collects and reviews information on the health and developmental status of students in a systematic and continuous manner. The nurse develops and maintains a nursing care plan with specific goals and interventions that are unique to individual student needs and administers medications, treatments, and procedures as directed by the student’s physician and Anchorage School District policy. This position collaborates with teachers, school staff, and administrators; and responds to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents/guardians regarding student health and wellness. The school nurse may provide clinical supervision to both licensed and unlicensed personnel. This position reports to and is evaluated by the principal with nursing practice input by the director of Health Services.

The annual salary for this position is $55,168 - $79,823, depending on education and experience. The work year is 182 days. 

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A bachelor’s of science degree in nursing.
  2. A valid Alaska type C special services certificate with an endorsement in nursing or school nurse.
  3. A state of Alaska registered nurse license certification, or a state of AK temporary nursing license that leads to a full license.
  4. A passing score on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
  5. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
 
The following is preferred:
  1. Two years of nursing experience, assessment, and referral skills.
 
Essential Job Functions
  1. Supports student learning, promotes health and wellness for an entire school.
  2. Actively assists in identifying students with disabilities and participates on multidisciplinary educational teams.
  3. Communicates regularly with parents by means of newsletters, notes, phone calls, conferences, etc.
  4. Understands how students learn and develop, and applies that knowledge in their practice.
  5. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective atmosphere.
  6. Conducts school medical screenings
  7. Coordinates medical plans for school sponsored trips.
  8. Provides nursing services including: Interpreting health history and developing appropriate care plan; Facilitating, monitoring, and assessing student health; Immunization status review; Treatment; Medication; Diabetes and seizure management; Health counseling; Linkage with community providers; Health promotion; Injury and disease prevention, intervention and education.
  9. Treats students with respect for their individual and cultural characteristics.
  10. Uses current technology to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  11. Creates a nursing environment that is conducive to the practice.
  12. Works as a partner with parents, families, and the community.
  13. Performs other duties to meet healthcare needs of students and staff as needed or assigned.
