ECYC Summer Internship
WHAT IS ECYC?
The mission of ECYC is to create a community that ensures students feel equipped to achieve self-reliance and advance social change.
In partnership with George Washington University and Smithsonian Institution, we provide eight-week internships around the country focused on engaging and activating young people to lead in the communities where they live and work. All organizations in ECYC believe we can strengthen our work through learning and working alongside young leaders.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM THIS INTERNSHIP?
ECYC is more than a summer internship—it is a holistic and interactive professional development experience. Interns will develop lifelong professional connections as an ECYC Alumni. Daily work is enhanced by:
PROGRAMMING
Every intern attends professional development and social justice programming. Participants learn from experts on climate and sustainability, gun violence reduction, educational equity, immigration policy, and other ECYC priority areas. Our career development, networking, and peer-led sessions will enhance interns' capacity to lead and impact positive change.
MENTORING
Each intern receives a 1:1 mentorship experience. Mentors integrate interns into their summer experience and help them unpack their learnings to inform their professional development. They will help interns navigate office etiquette and imposter syndrome and through weekly discussions they work to map out career goals and opportunities.
NETWORKING AND CONNECTIVITY
ECYC has partnerships with prominent national organizations and academic institutions. ECYC interns commit to learning and engaging with fellow interns, leaders, mentors, and teams from across all partner organizations. This helps build an extensive network for professional growth and development.
ALUMNI COMMUNITY
Every intern is invited to join our ECYC Alumni community and has the opportunity to apply to serve on the Alumni Committee. Career development training, programming opportunities, and workforce development are all a part of the alumni experience.

Internship Opportunities
Selected interns will work out of the Emerson Collective offices in the Bay Area (San Francisco, Palo Alto or Oakland, California) or Washington, D.C. with the possibility of occasional travel. Chicago CRED interns will work out of Chicago. Placement locations are determined by the internship, as indicated in the job description, and we are unable to accommodate geographic adjustments.

The Bloomhouse team advances equity and social justice in East Palo Alto by focusing on the following core areas: urban planning and policy, community building and advocacy, responsible real estate investment and development, and environmental issues. The Bloomhouse intern will work in support of community development, real estate projects, and community engagement, which will demand strong communication and critical thinking skills. This person will research potential partners, solutions, and studies related to the development and operations of the community and support the team’s placemaking efforts in East Palo Alto. The Bloomhouse intern will work from our office in East Palo Alto.
Brand Creative Studio: The Brand Creative Studio team drives the brand for Emerson Collective and our priority areas, working to change hearts and minds with world-class storytelling and design. The team is made up of brand management, creative, digital, strategy, production, and content creation roles. We are seeking interns passionate about social impact, brand marketing, film and production, and the creative process who are eager to jump in with a “no task is too small” mentality.
The Brand Leadership intern will work primarily with production and brand leads, assisting with strategy, project management, and production on issue area projects and Emerson Collective brand work. This intern will be assigned up to two core projects to focus on and will be integrated into the project team(s). They will help organize production and/or creative development workflow. The Brand Leadership intern will work at our offices in Palo Alto.
The Design intern will work primarily with the creative team on graphic design for Emerson Collective brand assets, priority area projects, our website, and digital assets. They will be assigned up to two core projects to focus on and will be integrated into the project team(s). They will also be tasked with other daily design needs. The intern must be open to feedback and have working knowledge of Figma and Adobe Creative Suite. They will be included in creative discussions on the intersection of brand building and design. The Design intern will work at our offices in Palo Alto, with the possibility of travel to Los Angeles.
The Digital intern will support the Collective’s website through content creation, analytics, and digital production. The intern must have familiarity with developing digital content, working in content management systems, managing social media channels, and have a basic understanding of web development. The Digital intern will work at our offices in Palo Alto.
The Production intern will work with the production team on filming and editing projects to support Emerson Collective brand assets and priority area projects. They will be integrated into project teams and participate in film shoots, video editing, and more. They will also take on daily organizational needs, including but not limited to the management of film and photo-clip databases and travel calendars, as well as support film, book, and content production. The intern should be open to feedback and have past experience or a proven interest in film production, as they will be part of the prep, production, and wrap of projects. The Production intern will work at our offices in Palo Alto, with the possibility of travel to Los Angeles.
The Campaigns team works across the Collective to move the needle on issues we care about most deeply, particularly around climate, immigration, education, and gun violence reduction. The team develops and executes high impact, integrated, and strategic communications campaigns using a variety of tools like arts and culture, events, data and research, owned and earned media, coalition building, and stakeholder engagement. These campaigns are unique and bespoke, with no two looking exactly alike. Interns will help with research and information gathering, draft written and content materials, help with social channels and generate posts, and monitor the news cycle. Candidates must possess an eye for detail and an energy to learn and grow in a fun environment. Campaigns interns will work at our office in Washington, D.C.
At Chicago CRED, we take a multifaceted approach to reducing gun violence, working directly with the individuals most likely to carry a gun or get shot and the communities where gun violence is most concentrated. Through street outreach, coaching and counseling, workforce development, and advocacy and prevention, we lift up young people and rally neighborhoods to dramatically rewrite the story of gun violence. CRED interns will engage with our program participants, develop a detailed understanding of the complex factors that drive violence, and witness the power of comprehensive solutions. The interns will also build versatility by contributing to special projects that arise across multidisciplinary teams at various community-based sites in Chicago.
Culture Council is an Emerson Collective team that bridges philanthropy and culture to influence the zeitgeist. Through interconnected investments, advisory services, and networking, we develop and deploy creative solutions that spur change. The Culture Council team seeks an intern interested in the nonprofit and commercial arts and culture landscape. The intern will support projects including original research to identify potential cultural investments; gathering information on current partner organizations; developing case-making narratives for future investments; and planning and executing upcoming cultural activations. They should have excellent research, writing, editing, and organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting with teams in different time zones. They should be deeply collaborative, professional, and curious, with a commitment to Emerson Collective’s mission and an interest in the intersection of culture and social change. The Culture Council intern will work at our offices in San Francisco or Palo Alto.
E Pluribus Unum (EPU) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that aims to build a more just, equitable, and inclusive American South. EPU focuses on cultivating and empowering courageous leaders who are advancing racial equity; championing transformative public policy; and changing the divisive narratives that perpetuate systemic racism. EPU interns should have a deep commitment to social justice. They will work directly with leadership across the organization's three focus pillars, with an emphasis on the pillar best aligned with their interests and goals. EPU interns will demonstrate thorough research skills, detail- oriented writing experience, and a collaborative spirit. Internship responsibilities include creating issue briefings, supporting events, conducting policy research, creating content, and assisting on production and materials development. The EPU interns will work at Emerson Collective’s offices in Washington, D.C., with potential travel to New Orleans.
Engineering and Data Science: The Engineering and Data Science team consists of software engineers, data scientists, technologists, and product managers spanning new product development, data science, and information technology (IT). Our mission is to use technology and data to amplify the impact of Emerson Collective and our partners and accelerate change. We are composed of three teams: IT provides technology and information technology services across the Collective; Internal Technology Products builds internal applications for the Collective and its partners; and Data Products delivers advisory services, collaborates on existing products, and prototypes new products.
The Data Products Product Manager intern will collaborate with the education and immigration product leads to drive product-related activities. This includes all facets of the product development lifecycle, including, but not limited to, conducting research, managing software development and data requirements, and facilitating user testing. The intern should be comfortable asking questions, taking initiative, and developing evidence-based rationales to support their decisions. They should have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be interested in product development and software tools for collaboration. Familiarity with desk or user research practices is recommended. This position will be based in Palo Alto.
The Data Science intern will develop data products such as analyses, interactive dashboards, predictive models, and data pipelines. This work includes conducting research to understand the Collective’s issue areas, crafting documentation, reviewing data outputs for quality and consistency, and reviewing code. We are looking for someone comfortable working in Python (preferred) or R and standard data science libraries and tools. Experience with some of the following platforms is also preferred: Docker, Github, APIs (primarily accessing), and SQL. This position will be based in Palo Alto.
The Information Technology intern will join a best-in-class IT organization emphasizing customer service and technical excellence. The intern will work alongside our support technicians and systems administrators to deliver the IT needs of the Emerson Collective community with enterprise-level systems, networking, mobile device management, cybersecurity, and conference room/audio-visual support. The intern should have a strong user experience orientation and approach, experience troubleshooting technical issues, and expertise in using productivity tools like Microsoft 365, Google Drive, Slack, and Zoom. They should be interested in technical support and in implementing new tools for a project or organization. The intern should also be curious about exploring cybersecurity, networking, project management, APIs and workflows, and finding unique solutions to technical needs. This position will be based in Palo Alto or Washington, D.C.
The Internal Technology Product Manager intern will support vision setting, scoping, and implementation of internally used products at Emerson Collective, working alongside colleagues to understand opportunities and challenges in order to build technology solutions. The intern should have strong project management skills and a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and handle simultaneous requests. They should be a creative and analytical thinker with strong problem-solving skills and ideally would have experience with data hygiene and/or cleanup. Familiarity with, or the desire to learn, data tools like Google Sheets, Airtable, and Salesforce is preferred. This position will be based in Palo Alto.
The Software Engineering intern will develop websites and web apps in a collaborative environment to support the goals of Emerson Collective. In addition to writing code, this work will include learning new technical skills, crafting documentation, and reviewing code. An ideal intern has experience with HTML, CSS, and software engineering in JavaScript and/or Python. This position will be based in Palo Alto.
The Events team plans and executes a broad spectrum of Emerson Collective functions, orchestrating the logistics of internal and external events integral to our organization. The Events intern will participate in the production of in-person, hybrid, and virtual events in a production assistant capacity: drafting run of shows, tracking attendees, taking meeting notes, disseminating action items, researching events supplies and vendors, preparing event materials and executive event briefings, providing on-site day-of assistance, and coordinating event debriefs. They will vet and track new vendors, such as caterers, audio-visual services, food trucks, venues, and accommodation services. The Events intern will develop toolkits, manuals, and templates for event execution as well as an event supply inventory and on-site supply packing systems. They may also participate as backend technical support on virtual event platforms, including Zoom. Experience with Excel, Outlook, and Salesforce is a plus. The Events intern will work out of our offices in Palo Alto.
Emerson Collective fellowships support remarkable individuals who are advancing important work across our issue areas. Emerson’s fellowship programs aim to encourage social entrepreneurs, journalists, scientists, lawyers, artists, academics, and others to make groundbreaking advancements, embark on bold new projects, shape public conversations, and grow their impact. The Fellows intern will support the day-to-day management of these programs, including our application, interview, and selection process; efforts to engage Fellows and build community; original research to identify potential Fellows; and helping plan our fall Fellows gathering and ongoing virtual events. The Fellows intern should have exceptional writing, editing, and research skills and an interest in event planning, communications, and community engagement. They should be deeply collaborative, professional, and curious, with a devotion to Emerson Collective’s mission. The Fellows intern will work at our offices in Palo Alto.
The Finance team works across all teams at the Collective to provide high quality financial operations support to maximize efficiencies and impact for the resources we deploy at EC. The Finance intern will work to strengthen our existing financial systems, improve financial management reporting, and conduct high-level research and analytics projects, with the opportunity to take point on presenting findings and work on financial and administrative challenges. This person will have strong analytical, data management, and communication skills, as they will be tasked with seeking information and feedback from across the Collective. The Finance intern will work at our offices in Palo Alto.
The Immigration team approaches local and national immigration issues through a social justice lens. The Immigration intern will support critical research and writing projects, including federal and state- based immigration policy and the various dimensions of migration, such as climate migration. The intern will also build versatility by contributing to special projects that arise across the Immigration team. They will work at our offices in Washington, D.C.
The Legal team supports all parts of Emerson Collective. Legal interns will gain practical experience in legal drafting, negotiating and management of back-office functions as well as develop their communication and time management skills. Legal Interns will have an opportunity to learn about a wide range of legal topics, such as corporate law, venture and fund related investments, nonprofit law, real estate, intellectual property, employment law and more. One Legal intern will primarily support the General Counsel and team in managing a broad and unique range of agreements that support the business teams across Emerson Collective. This will include, but not be limited to, drafting, reviewing and tracking contracts. One Legal intern will primarily support Emerson Collective’s investment activities. This will include focusing on drafting and negotiating investment related documents and supporting the complete investment process. Candidates must exhibit keen judgment, a proactive attitude, and adaptability in a fast-paced environment. Experience with contracts or other legal documents, or prior exposure to a legal office is generally a plus. However, being intellectually curious and genuinely passionate about empowering teams to have a positive impact in areas that align with Emerson Collective’s values is a must. Students who are rising undergraduate juniors and seniors may apply. Legal interns are expected to maintain a high degree of confidentiality inside and outside of the Collective. The Legal interns will work at our offices in Palo Alto.
The Marcom team leads internal and external communications and marketing for Emerson Collective. Marcom interns will provide support in creating social media content, guiding marketing strategy, supporting our Communications team, and gathering research for Emerson Collective and its partners. Applicants should have excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting with teams in different time zones. They should be keen media observers with an eye on the news cycle, possess an interest in further developing their writing skills, curiosity, and a drive for research, and have strong verbal communication skills. The Marcom interns will work at our offices in Palo Alto or Washington, D.C.
The Media team works on Emerson Collective’s journalism portfolio, which aims to empower storytellers and journalists who inform our communities and enrich our culture. The Media intern should have an interest in nonprofit and for-profit journalism as well as excellent research, writing, and editing skills and experience drafting briefings and memos. They will assist in managing operations, including virtual event planning and liaising with other teams across the Collective. The intern should also have proven organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting with teams in different time zones. Applicants should be cognizant of media dynamics and have a demonstrated interest in journalism. The Media intern will work at our offices in Palo Alto, CA with the possibility of travel.
The Office of the President serves as a central hub for Emerson Collective’s efforts to inspire lasting change in education, the environment, immigration, and health equity. The Office of the President intern will execute research, assist in the planning of site visits, draft briefing memos and support special projects. Preference will be given to applicants with a passion for the Collective’s core issue areas, extensive research experience, drive, curiosity, and strong written and verbal communication skills. The Office of the President intern will work at our offices in Palo Alto.
The People team powers the employee lifecycle at Emerson Collective. People interns will learn the inner workings of our stellar human resources and recruiting operations. Interns should have an interest in HR or talent matters, such as onboarding, recruitment, benefits, HR tech systems, performance feedback, learning and development programs, employee relations, and legal compliance. They will contribute to several projects simultaneously, including HR program research, operations, data and analytics, reviewing and posting job announcements, screening applications, exploring and cultivating DEIB recruitment partnerships, and facilitating onboarding. Successful candidates should exhibit exceptional attention to detail, sound judgment, excellent communication skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, a proactive attitude, and a commitment to confidentiality and discretion. The People interns will work at our offices in Palo Alto.
Philanthropy: The Philanthropy team partners with nonprofits working to create a more just and equitable world. Philanthropy interns will gain insight into grantmaking, with the opportunity to help draft memos, conduct research, and participate in meetings that advance our goal of supporting impactful nonprofits.
The Bookstore Philanthropy intern will support a project focused on the sustainability and impact of independent bookstores. They will participate in a variety of efforts, including researching trends in the book industry and meeting with bookstore owners, collaborators, and experts. The intern will have a demonstrated passion for Emerson Collective’s issue areas, strong communication skills, and the ability to multitask, as they will manage multiple projects. They will work at our offices in Palo Alto.
The Global Health Equity Philanthropy intern will support a portfolio of nonprofits focused on delivering high-quality health care to underserved populations and addressing social contributors to disease and ill health. The intern will have a demonstrated passion for Emerson Collective’s issue areas, strong communication skills, and the ability to multitask, as they will manage multiple projects. They will work at our offices in Palo Alto.
The Immigrant Justice Philanthropy intern will support a portfolio of nonprofits focused on protecting immigrant rights and creating a pathway to citizenship for undocumented people. The intern will have a demonstrated passion for Emerson Collective’s issue areas, strong communication skills, and the ability to multitask, as they will manage multiple projects. The Immigrant Justice Philanthropy intern will work at our offices in Palo Alto.
The Political team will spend 2023 focusing on expanding democracy protections at the state and local level. The team seeks an intern to help execute high-impact, integrated policy and electoral strategy across our core issue areas including immigration, education, the environment, and health equity. Ideal candidates will have an interest in policy and politics, experience with research and writing, a strong understanding of social media and the news cycle, a grasp of current events, an eye for detail, and an eagerness to learn and grow. The Political intern will work at our office in Washington, D.C.
Emerson Collective’s Strategic Planning and Development team works across the organization in place- based community-engagement, planning, finance and development projects. The Strategic Planning and Development interns should have an interest in urban planning, community development, engagement and finance as well as a background in financing mechanisms and strategies and/or community engagement or organizing. The interns will explore innovative solutions to complex problems and research urban planning issues. Projects will involve high-level research and analytics, with the interns expected to develop materials for presentations, meetings, and convenings. They will interact with team members across the Collective, in multiple time zones, as well as members of communities in which the work is done and should be excellent communicators. Experience with research and developing graphic presentations is preferred. The Strategic Planning and Development interns will work at our offices in Washington, D.C.
The Emerson Collective Venture Team invests in companies that are positively impacting the world and ensuring that people can live to their full potential. We invest in companies across a number of sectors, including financial technology, digital health, education, future of work and the worker and government technology. The Portfolio Support group within the Venture Team partners with Emerson Collective’s portfolio companies by building out services and resources to help them achieve impact at scale and grow their enterprise value.
The Portfolio Support intern will work alongside the Portfolio Support group and have the unique opportunity to gain insight into multiple functions such as operations and data analysis, community building, and event planning. Responsibilities for the role include, but are not limited to:
- Operationalizing portfolio support efforts through data capture, automation, and auditing internal CRM systems.
- Conducting a mid-year analysis on portfolio support strategies where the outcome of the analysis will drive the initiatives for the second half of the year.
- Assisting in writing newsletters that go out regularly to key company leaders.
- Helping plan and execute events that range from networking receptions to hands-on tactical
- workshops for company leaders.
The Portfolio Support Intern will work at the Emerson Collective offices in Palo Alto and San Francisco.
XQ Institute is the nation’s leading organization dedicated to rethinking the high school experience so every student graduates ready to succeed. We help schools and districts throughout the U.S. dream big about what high school could be, turn their innovative ideas into action, and create more rigorous and equitable schools. We share what works so other schools and districts can tailor new models to the needs of their students and communities. Our open-source tools, based on research and design thinking, empower people to transform their high schools with a unifying goal: unlocking the American promise of a high-quality education for everyone. XQ is seeking interns to support several initiatives across various teams, including Youth Engagement; School Success; Research, Data, and Evaluation; Education Systems Strategy, XQ Labs, Products and Tools; Marketing, Creative, and Strategy; and Operations. XQ interns will gain exposure to a wide cross-section of our work and should have experience with creating detail-oriented project plans. They may also employ creative writing and photography in the curation of new content for our social media efforts. As the expansion of our policy platform and on-the-ground community activations are a central goal for 2023, candidates must have strong research, writing, and communication abilities. The XQ interns will work at our offices in Oakland, California but will be based in Palo Alto, California.
The Youth and Community Engagement team seeks to engage and activate young people to lead in the communities where they live and work. We build relationships with academic and public sector institutions, foundations, nonprofits, and the private sector to promote justice and increase impact. Youth and Community Engagement interns tap into all teams across Emerson Collective to foster innovation and collaboration in youth programming and internships, alumni planning and coordination, and workforce development. The interns will conduct thorough research and help draft briefs, memos, and meeting agendas. They will be tasked with creating slide decks and workshop portfolios and managing events. The Youth and Community Engagement interns will work at our offices in Washington, D.C.
GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY: HONEY NASHMAN CENTER
Mission
The Honey W Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service at George Washington University is part of the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement. The Nashman Center’s mission is to integrate civic engagement into GW’s educational work. We promote equity and active citizenship in a diverse democracy, focus GW’s resources to address community needs through reciprocal partnerships beyond the campus, and enhance teaching, learning, and scholarship at GW. We are GW’s central office for partnerships with the local D.C. community and have been in partnership with D.C. Public Schools and many nonprofits for many years, offering tutoring, mentoring, and enrichment programs. Our programs support day-to-day needs while working to address systemic issues.
Opportunity
Interns with the Honey Nashman Center will work in the Civic Changemakers program in Washington, D.C. over the course of the summer and will be AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates. Civic Changemakers is a free civic education program for middle school students in DC Public Schools. As a Civic Changemakers Intern, you will work in person with a team of other interns to lead groups of middle school students through Civic Changemaker curriculum, which helps students create and implement a service project that impacts their community, as well as activities that support social and emotional learning for students. Civic Changemaker interns are passionate about service learning and civic education. The interns will support middle school students as they learn about local community and government assets and implement a service-learning project with a variety of learning experiences.
Responsibilities

SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION
Mission
The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex. Smithsonian Affiliations is committed to helping people across the globe understand the complexity and the nuances of our world by collaborating with a network of mission-aligned Affiliate organizations in this critical work.
Opportunity
This internship provides an opportunity to use your interest and skills in social justice to support museums and cultural organizations in affecting change in our communities. You will become a museum advocate and explore new ways to bring museum content, resources, and expertise to communities near and far. There are two (2) internship opportunities with the Smithsonian.
Projects will vary based on location and may include opportunities in museum advocacy, communications, exhibition development, national and community outreach, educational equity and accessibility, digital engagement, international relations, and more. All projects will focus on one or more of four core topic areas—Women’s History, Climate Change, Race and Social Justice, and the Changing American Narrative (including rural initiatives, immigration, education, civics, democracy, and other topics). Both internships include opportunities to network with the full ECYC summer cohort.
- Hybrid Internship at a Smithsonian Affiliate organization. Interns will spend three weeks in-person at an Affiliate organization* and five weeks working virtually at their home location. This internship is designed to be a part-time, hybrid learning experience not to exceed 32 hours of work per week. This internship offers the greatest flexibility for caregivers, students who want to stay local, or those who are also working during the summer and would like to still have an internship opportunity. We have a strong preference for placing students at Affiliates near where they will be living for the summer to maximize time onsite, ease travel and lodging logistics, and most importantly, to enable students to have a greater impact on their own communities.
- *Pre-selected Affiliate cities will be posted on the Smithsonian Affiliations website; not all Smithsonian Affiliates are participating in this internship.
- In-Person Internship in Washington, D.C. Interns will spend eight weeks at the Smithsonian* for a hands-on, in-person learning experience. Interns will work three or more days per week on-site at a Smithsonian office, not to exceed 32 hours per week. *Interns will be matched with a pre-selected group of Smithsonian museums, offices, centers, libraries, or programs; not all Smithsonian museums are participating in this internship.
