Environmental Intern - Summer 2023

Company Overview
Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.
Job Summary
The Environmental, Health and Safety Intern will collect data pertaining to the environmental, health and safety conditions of the workplace. The Intern in this role will work to anticipate, recognize and mitigate hazards to help prevent harm to workers, property, the environment, and the general public. This Intern will also collect samples and measurements as part of workplace inspections. For example, they may collect and handle samples of wastewater, stormwater, or other environmental contaminates. The Intern in this role will conduct both routine and special inspections under the guidance of the EHS Manager.
Responsibilities
  • Perform behavior-based inspections and/or walkabouts to ensure safety and environmental compliance
  • Assist with environmental permitting activities including regulatory reviews, gathering information, compiling trends, and conducting and/or scheduling inspections or sampling (e.g. Wastewater, Stormwater, Spill Prevention, Control & Countrmeasure Plans)
  • Assists with compiling information and date for EPA Compliance Reports (e.g. Tier II, Form R, RMP, etc. )
  • Mature the Waste Management Program which may include: Hazardous Waste, Universal Waste, Regulated Waste, Biohazardous and Radiological Waste
  • Assist with sampling for Environmental and Health & Safety compliance
  • Develop and track the EHS Regulatory Compliance calendar
  • Examine credentials, licenses, or permits to ensure compliance with licensing requirements
  • Assist with planning, developing, and conducting EHS training
  • Assist with reports on a daily, weekly, monthly or annual basis
  • Support initiatives related to management commitment; employee involvement; hazard assessment; hazard prevention and control; and safety and health training
  • Support site injury reduction, environmental and sustainability goals, and other initiatives including the Environmental, Health & Safety Committee
  • Interpretation of OSHA, NFPA, NIOSH, ANSI, EPA standards and regulations
  • All other duties as assigned by the EHS Manager
Qualifications
  • Enrollment in Public Health, Occupational Health, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or related field preferred
  • Have a “can do” attitude, take direction well, be self-motivated, and communicate well with the team
  • Candidate must possess a working knowledge of EHS regulations & standards
  • Outstanding multi-tasking and presentation skills
  • Ability to create momentum and foster organizational change
  • Strong attention to detail and observational skills
  • Strong written, and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with regulatory agencies
  • Task oriented self-starter with the ability to work unsupervised
  • Proficient with computer software programs including MS Office Suite
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team

  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of one self and others
  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge

  • Experience working in an industrial facility with engagement and mitigation of hazards preferred
Physical Conditions
  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, scissor lifts, articulated boom lifts and the like
  • Setting up and transferring temporary structures (e.g. scaffolding, ladders)
  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
  • Adjusting, moving, transporting, installing, positioning, or removing objects up to 50 pounds in all directions

  • Repetitive assembly operations of manufacturing test fixtures and test setups in collaboration with engineering and manufacturing teams

Safety and PPE
  • Reading and interpreting hazardous warning signs
  • Manipulating, cleaning and disposal of hazardous materials

  • Wearing proper PPE, to include face mask, face shields, gloves, safety shoes
  • Handling of Beryllium (Be)
Certification
  • Capable of obtaining forklift and boom lift certification 
Additional Requirements
  • Occasionally requires schedule flexibility
  • Occasionally requires extended hours to support launch and critical project timelines
