The Watershed Improvement Branch (WIB) is hiring one to two summer interns to work
with the Western Watershed Basin & Project Water Education Today (WET) Coordinator
out of the Charleston WV Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP)
headquarters.

This position is based in Charleston and will focus on the Elk, Kanawha, Coal, Lower
Guyandotte, Twelvepole, Lower Ohio, Big Sandy, and Middle Ohio South watersheds,
with occasional statewide travel to areas such as Canaan Valley, the New River Gorge,
Twin Falls State Park, etc. Overnight travel (travel reimbursement is included), weekend
work, and/or long work days (10-12 hours) may be required in certain instances. A
maximum of 40 hours will be available, but not required for each work week. The
position will be in an office setting with multiple opportunities for field work in wetlands
at Twin Falls State Park, Twin Falls State Park, McClintic Wildlife Management Area, and
Green Bottom Swamp Wildlife Management area, as well as streams, educational
institutions, and various state and federal government offices. A state vehicle can be
reserved for travel purposes; use of a personal vehicle is not required to travel from the
Charleston Headquarters to your area of assignment.

The position will primarily be working with the Western Watershed Basin & Project WET
Coordinator and the rest of WIB to perform beginning level professional work in the
preservation, management, and enhancement of the state’s water resources;
supporting Project WET educational outreach work and working with nonprofit
volunteer-led watershed groups in areas relating to watershed improvement projects
and water education.

Work duties for this position include assisting volunteers and Project WET partners with
conducting water education outreach events, compiling video and information for
wetlands within the western watershed basins, conducting water quality monitoring
and calculations for watershed plans, improving learning management systems where
the WV Water Festival Curriculum is housed, assisting citizen watershed groups in
organizing, planning and pursuing funding and assisting other community based
volunteers in their work to improve water quality. This position is an excellent
opportunity to interact with various branches of state and federal government, develop
communication skills, and learn about environmental career opportunities.

Additionally, various training and certifications will be available, including certification
in Project WET, Project Learning Tree, and Save Our Streams Level 1.
