About the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA):
FSSA was established by the Indiana General Assembly in 1991 to consolidate and better integrate the delivery of human services by state government. FSSA is a health care and social services funding agency. The eight care divisions in FSSA administer services to more than 1.5 million Hoosiers. FSSA’s mission is to compassionately serve Hoosiers of all ages and connect them with social services, health care and their communities.
FSSA Data and Analytics (D&A) provides analytics solutions tailored to address complex management and policy questions, enabling improved outcomes for Hoosiers. Complex problems require leveraging data in innovative ways that often spans multiple data systems within FSSA and across state agencies, resulting in a need for data sharing and integration. The Data Scientist position will collaborate with the D&A team, agency partners, outside stakeholders to develop effective data products, including statistical support for research and evaluation, dashboards, data stories, and predictive models.
Hourly Wage: This Internship opportunity pays $16.24 per hour.
Internship Overview:
The Data Scientist intern will collaborate with the Data and Analytics team, agency partners, outside stakeholders to develop effective data products, including statistical support for research and evaluation, dashboards, data stories, and predictive models:
- Munges, cleans, and prepares data.
- Performs exploratory data analysis in order to understand state data.
- Interprets results from multiple sources using a variety of techniques, ranging from simple data aggregation via statistical analysis to complex data mining independently.
- Develops analytic and predictive models for business needs.
About the Job:
This program is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the Governor’s Public Service Summer Internship will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels and much more.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
- Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
- Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
- Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
- Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives

What You'll Need for Success:
- Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
- Academic work in related field
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
- Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
- Ability to conduct well-informed research
- Ability to solve complex, critical problems
- Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
