Summer Resource Management & Maintenance Intern - Antietam National Battlefield

Title: Summer Resource Management and Maintenance Individual Placements

Dates: May 30th, 2023 – August 18th, 2023 (12 weeks)

Position Summary:
This is a great opportunity to spend your summer outside learning about resource management and land stewardship! 
 
The Resource Management and Maintenance Individual Placement is an internship position based at Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland. The Resource Management and Maintenance Individual Placements will serve directly with and under the supervision of National Park Service staff with the Resource Management and Maintenance Divisions to complete a wide variety of natural and cultural resource field projects in Summer 2023. The 12-week position will be involved with activities related to the preservation of the natural and cultural landscape. You will serve on a small team of tight knit staff and interns to complete project work.
 
Projects will include but are not limited to:
  • Invasive and exotic plant control through use of chemical and manual methods
  • Establishment and maintenance of warm season grasslands/meadows and orchard maintenance
  • Water monitoring
  • Assisting with GIS data collection
  • Vegetation identification
  • Trail maintenance activities such as mulching, cutting back vegetation and tree removal
  • Landscape maintenance
  • Cultural resource management activities such as monument cleaning and painting of war department tablets.
 
The intern will be required to operate passenger vehicles and light trucks, along with operating a variety of hand and power tools such as trimmers, and backpack and tank herbicide sprayers.
 
The work involves standing, bending, walking and a moderate amount of physical exertion. Intern may be required to lift items weighing up to 25 pounds in performance of assigned duties. Most work is performed outdoors where the intern may encounter variable weather conditions and exposure to insects, poison ivy and snakes. Work performed indoors is in an office or workshop setting.
 
Housing is NOT provided for this position.

  • $600/week living stipend, paid bi-weekly 
  • $1,718.25 AmeriCorps Segal Education Award upon successful completion of 450 hour service term (award amount varies based on length of commitment and can be used for paying off federal student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college)

General Qualifications:
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 30 (exception for Veterans up to age 35) 
  • Have US Citizenship or Legal Permanent Residency status
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Pass background checks: all offers of positions are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and Federal and/or State criminal background check
  • Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (individuals are eligible if they have not already completed 2 full years of AmeriCorps service, or 4 AmeriCorps service terms, whichever comes first – please contact us if you are unsure of your eligibility) 
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Willingness to work as part of a team
  • Physically capable of field activities (hiking, carrying backpacks and equipment) in adverse conditions (high heat, high humidity, biting insects, rough terrain, inclement weather)
  • Comfortable working in a field and office environment
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Demonstrated experience working in a field environment
  • Experience working on small teams
  • Familiarity with local plant identification
