The Annual NJ TRANSIT Summer Internship Program is a 10-Week
paid program geared towards college students enrolled in an accredited degree
program.

The UAS Technical Specialist is an entry-level position that will focus on routine/necessary functions that are required to conduct a safe and effective UAS program. The person in this position will be involved with the crafting, submitting, and renewing of FAA Part 107 airspace authorizations; overseeing the regular inspection and maintenance of NJT-owned UAS assets; conducting UAS data collection missions under Part 107 rules using NJT-owned UASs; and, uploading and processing of imagery into products for delivery to various business units with NJ TRANSIT. The person in this position will also be tasked with developing and/or modifying, as necessary, checklists for safe operation of each of NJ TRANSIT’s aerial platforms. This position will also be responsible for developing/scheduling training exercises for selected NJ TRANSIT UAS operators.
 
Objective of this role:
·      Execute regular maintenance tasks on all NJ TRANSIT UAS components including but not limited to:
a. Current firmware versions
b. Battery health
c. Structural integrity
·      Maintain currency of all previously granted FAA Part 107.41 authorizations
·      Plan and execute UAS missions to meet customer requirements. Missions type may include:
a. Mapping
b. Infrastructure inspection
c. Videography
d. Photography
·      Create and maintain checklists for all mission phases customized for each NJ TRANSIT UAS type, as applicable.
·      Develop training material and exercises to promote fluency/currency in all UAS operational phases.
Education and Experience:
·      Successful completion of first year in formal UAS program offered at an accredited college or university with a major in AAS, Unmanned Systems
·      Demonstrated course work and projects that have a direct correlation to roles and responsibilities of position
·      Minimum of 10 flight hours on any class of UAS
·      Current FAA Part 107 RPC with up-to-date currency certificate (if applicable)
·      Experience with multi-rotor and fixed-wing UAS platforms
Skills and Qualifications:
·      Fundamental knowledge of GIS practices and principles.
·      Fundamental knowledge of FAA Safety Management System
·      Fluency with DJI software ecosystem
·      Intermediate level knowledge of videographic and photographic practices and principles
·      Fluency with Microsoft Office Suite
·      Ability to create orthomosaic maps and 3D models using popular software packages such as Pix4D and Drone Deploy
·      Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Required:
·      Valid FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate with record of currency
·      Valid U.S. driver’s license
Optional:
·      FAA Part 61 Pilot Certificate (Sport, Private, Commercial, ATP) with plane and/or helicopter rating(s)
·      Valid FAA Class I, II, or III medical certificate
Working Environment:
·      Hybrid (Field & In-person) – Newark 
·      Time will be split between office and field locations. Field locations could be at improved and/or unimproved NJ TRANSIT owned and/or operated facilities/properties.
