Conservation Begins Here

Calumet Tree Conservation Corps 2023 Young Adult Crew (PO-00734627)

The SCA Calumet Tree Conservation Crew (CTCC) will plant 500 trees in the Grand Calumet watershed within the Indiana communities of East Chicago, Hammond, Whiting, Gary, Hobart, and others. The crew will work closely with SCA and USDA Forest Service staff to recruit, develop, and support new and existing volunteers at these planting sites with a specific goal of increasing the number of individuals engaged in tree canopy stewardship in those communities.

Crew members are expected to attend SCA provided training to ensure safe and effective tree canopy conservation as well as training in basic digital mapping and data collection techniques. Members will be expected to engage with local community members and corporate partners in tree care at designated volunteer events, mostly on Saturday mornings.

The CTCC will care for and maintain over 3,000 trees planted in previous program seasons throughout the aforementioned communities. This maintenance will consist of re-mulching, weeding, pruning, watering, checking for signs of disease, and updating iTree data reporting for each tree.

One week of work (exact dates TBD, likely mid-September) will consist of a weeklong trip (Sunday-Friday or Saturday) at a US National Forest, likely in Michigan or Indiana. Crew members are expected to attend this USFS Urban Connections Experience. Camping equipment or cabin housing will be provided, as well as field based meals.

Crew members will be paid $15/hr for 35hrs of work per week on a Tuesday-Saturday schedule.
