Structural Design Technician

SUMMARY:  Optimizes and generates clear, complete, and accurate truss design shop drawings.

POSITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Investigates preliminary information and data necessary to generate truss designs
  • Designs structurally sound truss designs that conform to Engineering principles.
  • Reviews and optimizes designs for most efficient use of materials, equipment, and manpower.
  • Utilizes knowledge of various computer software, engineering practices, mathematics, building materials, and other physical sciences to complete drawings.
  • Ability to read and understand truss layouts to verify truss profiles and review truss to truss loading.
  • Report changes that affect the layout back to the layout designer including but not limited to ply changes, reduced spacing, profile changes, or any other changes that have a direct effect on the layout of the trusses.
  • Communicate to department manager issues that need to be addressed within the department.
  • Performs other job-related duties or special projects as assigned.
 
COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
·        Knowledge of truss plant production requirements.
·        Understanding of code requirements and loading conditions as they relate to truss design.
·        Knowledge of equipment used in the plant and how to produce efficient truss drawings for production.
·        Ability to use the company software and other software applications as related to truss design.
·        The ability to notice, interpret, and anticipate others’ concerns and feelings and to communicate with them.
·        Expand proficiency of various truss designs by applying new guidelines learned periodically.
·        Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry/trigonometry.
·        Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
·        Ability to define problem, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

·        Individuals currently enrolled and attending an accredited college or university, in courses such as CAD – Computer Aided Drafting or Engineering Design.
·        Recent graduates of an accredited college or university, with Architectural Drafting focus, utilizing 3-D Drafting and structural building concepts.
·        Associates degree or equivalent from two year college or technical school; or two (2) to four (4) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
·        *TTT Level I Certification and previous design experience in the truss industry preferred or enter through Design Training Program.
·        Preferably taken the following courses in their educational career:

o   Algebra
o   Geometry
o   Trigonometry
o   Basic computer operations
o   Computer-aided/drafting design courses
o   Building Construction

 
LANGUAGE SKILLS
·        Ability to read, analyze and interpret general mechanical and technical procedures or government regulations in English.
·        Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from internal and external customers whose first language is English.
