Position Title: Resource Management Individual Placement – 480 HR (12 weeks)
 
Position Summary:
Lewis and Clark National Historical Park is recruiting for two Resource Management Individual Placements beginning in early June 2023, through August 2023. With seven sites on both sides of the Columbia River in Washington and Oregon, the park includes wetlands, upland forests, coastal dunes, and prairies. While working with the park’s Resource Management Division, the members will primarily be assisting with invasive species control and a variety of monitoring projects.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
For invasive plant control (70%), duties include conducting surveys of forest and wetlands for invasive plants, mechanical removal using shovels and string trimmers, and application of herbicide when appropriate.
Members will receive training in integrated pest management principles, safe herbicide application and plant identification skills from staff. For park monitoring projects (20%), duties may include surveying forest monitoring plots, conducting wetland vegetation surveys, performing driving surveys for elk, and entering data into a database. The members will spend approximately (10%) of their time receiving formal training in general safety, policies, and job opportunities with the National Park Service. The AmeriCorps term will conclude with a report about the work completed during the summer.
 
Required Qualifications:
·        Ability to work outdoors, hike, and work in inclement weather across uneven terrain
·        Willingness to work as part of a team in an outdoor setting
·        Willingness to carry and use herbicides
·        Good written and verbal communication skills
·        Ability to paddle and self-rescue out of a kayak or canoe (training will be provided)
·        Ability to lift and carry up to 25lbs
·        Ability to safely use hand tools and power tools such as loppers and string trimmers
·        Willingness to submit to a government background check
·        Current driver’s license, a clean driving record, and personal transportation
·        A positive attitude and willingness to learn
 
Desired Qualifications:
·        Knowledge of Northwest natural resources and plants
·        College coursework in biology
·        Previous experience using GPS units and maps and compass for navigating off-trail
 
Duty Location:
The members will report to the Resources Division in the Fort Clatsop Unit of Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, 92381 Fort Clatsop Road in Astoria, OR. There is no housing available at the park.
 
 
Terms of Employment:
Each AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting early June 2023, through August 2023. Starting date is negotiable to accommodate student schedules. The focus is on the months of June, July, and August due to the growth season of vegetation. The member must complete a minimum of 480 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.

Program Benefits:
·        $5760 stipend, prorated on a pay period (monthly) basis
·        $1,718.25 education award upon completion of the 480 hours of service.
 
The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food and transportation. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
