CDC Fellowship on Showcasing the Suite of Online GIS Tools for Chronic Disease Surveillance

CDC Office and Location: This opportunity is available with the Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch, in the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP), within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
DHDSP has a mission to provide national leadership, public health and scientific expertise, and program support to optimize cardiovascular health for all. Priorities for the Division include reducing the risk as well as improving the management and control of hypercholesterolemia and hypertension and reducing the burden of stroke and heart disease. 
Research Project: Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant will have the opportunity to learn about CDC’s online suite of GIS Tools for Chronic Disease Surveillance and share these tools with others, especially to draw attention to opportunities for displaying maps of social determinants of health to address health equity. The suite of GIS tools includes the Atlas of Heart Disease and Stroke, Local Trends in Heart Disease and Stroke Dashboard, Map Widget, Quick Maps, Map Gallery, and Rate Stabilizing Tool.   
Learning Objectives: These activities may include:
  • Gain experience providing technical assistance for using the suite of on-line GIS tools to staff in a broad range of CDC partner organizations such as:
  • State and local health departments
  • Tribal Epidemiology Centers
  • Health Systems
  • Community Organizations
  • Gain experience providing technical assistance in a variety of formats, such as:
  • Webinars
  • One-on-one sessions
  • Video Tutorials
  • Demonstrations at professional conferences
  • Identify options for additional data sources, navigational techniques, on-line tools etc., by
  • Actively scanning new and existing on-line mapping tools
  • Identifying data and mapping needs among constituents
  • Collaborating with DHDSP staff to identify priority health topics
  • Conducting literature reviews of mapping and data visualizations
  • Highlight the use of CDC’s GIS tools to address social determinants of health (SDoH)
  • Current data available at county and census tract level
  • Opportunities for new data sources
  • Developing case studies for layering SDoH data with heart disease and stroke, health care facilities, etc.
  • Other related activities as discussed with mentor that further the science base related to the small area surveillance and analysis of heart disease and stroke

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 29, 2023.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.
Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g., Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Geography, Education, Website Development, Data Visualization), or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion before May 31, 2023. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date. 
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience providing technical assistance for various audiences
  • Experience conducting literature reviews
  • Experience analyzing or making use of spatial and/or spatiotemporal data
  • Experience with data visualization software, such as Power BI – this may be useful
  • Experience using ArcGIS or other mapping software packages
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
