Education & Youth Development Intern in Uganda

Isla offers the following internship opportunities in Uganda:

Intern in cooperation with the host organization's team responsible for project development and management, and/or research. In general, this position is structured so that the intern provides research and programmatic support to the organization and their work to develop and empower youth regarding gender equality, social justice, environmental conservation, and climate change in a community development context in the district of Rukungiri, Uganda. The Intern will also conduct research related to the history and culture of the region in support of the Intern’s interests and academic degree requirements.

About the Host Organization
The organization is a non-profit foundation, community-based organization located in Rukungiri, Uganda. Founded in 2016, it aims to spreadhead the transition of youth from the societal challenges they face to an emphasis on the opportunities that exist to help them reach a better quality of life in Uganda. Their programs and activities focus on peace and equality among youth, livelihood support and community mobilization, youth leadership development, environmental conservation, and business development and social innovation.

Host Organization Project and Internship Description:

The Isla Intern will provide support to one or more of the following focus areas:

1. Advocacy and Community Mobilization The organization organizes community meetings with local community leaders, church leaders, local council officials, youth and women groups to discuss topics related to children and youth human rights and social justice. They aim to raise awareness and mobilize the community to support their children and youth regarding gender-based violence prevention, gender equality, and social justice. The advocacy and community mobilization projects seeks to engage youth in community service and social impact and income generation activities to provide youth with economic empowerment that is a benefit to their future and the communities in which they live.

2. Youth Leadership Development Through leadership development, the organization mentors, guides, and trains youth to become dynamic advocates, managers, and participants in community development. Providing leadership training prepares youth to manage time, work in a team setting, set goals, start conversations, facilitate meetings, and make effective presentations; all of which are positive life skills that they will carry into adulthood.

Activities include:
  • Life Skills Empowerment Camps Through this activity, the organization plans and coordinates Life Skills Camps with educational institutions as a mechanism for promoting the development of lifelong critical lifelong skills among young people. Skills that are crucial but are not taught in school are targeted such as mental health, confidence, decision- making, negotiation and communication skills, managing peer pressure, and goal setting. These skills are layered with hands-on skills training and entrepreneurship.
  • Behavioral Change and Communication campaigns target young people involved in risky health and social behaviors. The organization has various platforms such as a weekly youth show dubbed that airs on Radio Rukungiri 96.9fm; Voice of Development every Sunday 4 to 5pm; and an online television show that airs on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube).
  • High School Leavers Internship Program gives high school leavers a first look into what getting an idea about what it's like to have a full-time job and aims at giving young people the opportunity to become experienced with different working environments to see what suits them. Interns are placed with businesses and organizations.
  • School to School: Edutainment engages young people in discussions and activities in a range of topics related to peace, gender equality, health, entrepreneurship, and via the arts and entertainment.

3. Conservation and Environmental Protection This project focuses on raising awareness activities with youth. Such activities include:
  • The promotion of smart agriculture: permaculture, composting, beekeeping.
  • The promotion and production of renewable energy.
  • The establishment of environmental conservation school clubs.
  • Tree planting drives in the communities.
  • Environmental conservation activities in the schools such as debates, music, dance, educational theatre, and conservation camps.
  • Raising awareness through media outlets.

4. The promotion of better sexual and reproductive health services for adolescent girls and boys through activities inside and outside of the schools. The project aims to provide youth with a better understanding of sexual reproductive health, gender equality, the prevention of gender-based violence, community mobilization, and more.
The project provides integrated community-based adolescent health promotion activities focusing on:
  • HIV/AIDS prevention among at-risk youth especially adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), young married women and their partners;
  • the promotion of menstrual hygiene in the schools for girls;
  • Gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and linkage to care;
  • the linkage with public health facilities for adolescent reproductive health services; and
  • school health promotion programs.

5. Business Development and Social Innovation This project is designed to provide young people with useful entrepreneurial, business, and innovation skills. The project provides many unemployed and underemployed youth with the skills to create businesses as income generators and social impact innovations that can change how things are done in the community.
  • The Youth Skilling and Innovation Center promotes and nurtures innovation, vocational and entrepreneurial skills development among young people through structured and unstructured experiential technical learning, innovation, creativity, and social interaction.
  • Youth participate in various courses such as culinary arts, construction, IT and communication, journalism, radio broadcasting, graphic design, fashion design and shoe making, book binding, agriculture, value-added food production, and more.
  • It is also a space where young people can use the resources found in the digital library and a safe place where they can discuss issues related to social justice, peace, equality, health, the environment, etc.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
This internship is intended to mirror the expectations and responsibilities of an entry-level global development position. If the Intern is simultaneously interning to satisfy academic credit, research, or capstone project requirements for their degree programs, Isla will work closely with the host organization to ensure the Intern meets these requirements. This position works under the supervision of the partner organization with oversight by the Isla Executive Director.
