Position Title: Natural Resource Technician AmeriCorps Member- 680 HR

Position Summary:
Payette National Forest is recruiting for two Natural Resource Technician AmeriCorps Members beginning approximately mid-May through mid-Sep 2023 (Exact date is negotiable). This placement is with the Payette National Forest Supervisor's Office in McCall, Idaho. The member operates as a technician on a multi-discipline resource crew implementing a variety of projects for Hydrology, Wildlife, Botany, Range, Timber, Fisheries, Archelogy, Engineering, and Recreation resources. The position will also assist as an instructor and leader for a Youth Conservation Corps crew.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Forty percent (40%) of the incumbent's time will assist as an instructor and leader in conservation work projects for a Youth Conservation Corps of four high school students. This individual will perform work such as: leading a crew of 16 to 18-year-olds in the accomplishment of conservation work projects and instruct them in job related tasks including the safe and efficient use of appropriate tools and equipment. Work projects includes, but not limited to, conservation and environmental related activities such as tree planting and revegetation projects, trail and campground maintenance, fish and wildlife habitat surveys, fencing, and data collection of various resources.
  • Sixty percent (60%) of the incumbent's time will assist other technicians and professionals in a wide variety of resource projects such as rare plant surveys and monitoring, seed and cone collections, revegetation and erosion control, installation of beaver dam analogs, road and trail data collection, fencing, abandon mine surveys, road decommissioning, range, and timber management projects.

Required Qualifications:
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work constructively with a crew of young, inexperienced workers (ranging in age from 16-18 years of age). This includes the ability to introduce new tasks to be performed as well as applying motivational techniques to keep crew working and completing projects.
  • Skill in using hand tools such as shovels, brush axes, wheelbarrows, etc.
  • Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground for up to 10 hours per day
  • Current driver's license
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs
  • Member may travel to other duty stations during the work week and remain overnight

Desired Qualifications:
  • Coursework in Natural Resource Management
  • Working knowledge in tree and plant identification for the Rocky Mountains
  • Basic GIS/GPS skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated, reliable, and high attention to detail

Duty Location:
Duties are performed out of the Payette National Forest Supervisor's Office in McCall Idaho. Government housing will be provided.

Terms of Employment:
Each AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting May to Sept. The member must complete a minimum of 680 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.

Program Benefits:
A $7650 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and a $2474.27 education award upon completion of the 680 hours of service.

The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
