CRDIP Cultural Resources Assistant- Bandelier National Monument

Summary: American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) is seeking one Cultural Resources Assistant interested in dedicating 12 weeks to support Bandelier National Monument with archeological site documentation, preservation treatments, museum management, and/or interpretation and educational programming.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a professional development internship that introduces students and recent graduates, from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the National Parks, to career opportunities within Cultural Resource Management in the NPS. Location: Bandelier National Monument, Los Alamos, NM

Bandelier National Monument protects over 33,000 acres of rugged but beautiful canyon and mesa country as well as evidence of a human presence here going back over 11,000 years. Petroglyphs, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls pay tribute to the early days of a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities.

Living Allowance: ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $580/week to offset the costs of housing, food, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Park housing will be provided at no cost. It will include single or double occupancy bedrooms with shared bathrooms, kitchens, etc. No housing unit has an occupancy greater than 4 people. There is no WiFi and cell service is spotty in the park and park housing.
Having a personal vehicle is highly recommended for this position. There is a shuttle with limited hours that goes between the Visitor's Center and White Rock every half hour between 9am and 4pm, but could be crowded during peak visitation.

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 450-hour AmeriCorps Education Award ($1,718.25) upon successful completion of service hours.

Position Description: ​​The ACE member will assist in a range of cultural resource management opportunities to assist park staff with archeological site documentation, preservation treatments, museum management, and interpretation and educational programming. This position can be broad in scope or more focused depending on the interests of the selected candidate. The aim is to help the ACE member develop, inform, and potentially focus their career development and path beyond the internship.

Some specific projects planned for summer 2023:
  • Archeological site revisits and documentation updates in the Burnt Mesa trail area (including some backcountry work) and in the Tsankawi unit in preparation for hazardous fuels reduction projects planned by the park's fire program
  • Project to record the Ancestral trails at the Tsankawi unit which includes GPS data collection, photography, and written documentation
  • Increase documentation of backcountry cavate sites using Preservation Program program documentation methods and forms
  • Museum documentation and reporting which includes housekeeping, monitoring, integrated pest management, and annual inventory
  • Data management including GIS data upkeep, digital documentation, and digitizing paper archives
  • Interpretation, public outreach, and curriculum/program development (atlatl demonstrations, "porch talks", and so much more!)
  • Monitoring the long term effects on archeological sites of pinyon-juniper lop and scatter fuels management
  • Fire resource advising and planning

Required Qualifications:
  • Competitive applicants will hold or be pursuing a bachelor's degree in cultural resource management, anthropology, archeology, history, museum studies, historic preservation or other related field
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
