Human Geography Linguist
Human Geography Linguists apply expertise in geography, foreign languages, and linguistics to analyze foreign language sources and to develop policy recommendations for the standardization of foreign geographic names. They monitor and conduct foreign language research in their area of responsibility, identify administrative, linguistic, and human geography changes, and build foundation geospatial data layers. In addition, these analysts serve as staff on the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) and provide policy recommendations to the Foreign Names Committee (FNC).
MANDATORY QUALIFICATION CRITERIA: For this particular job, applicants must meet all competencies reflected under the Mandatory Qualification Criteria to include education (if required). Online applications must demonstrate qualification by providing specific examples and associated results, in response to the announcement's mandatory criteria specified in this vacancy announcement:
1. Demonstrated ability to research and analyze sources containing foreign geographic names and other
human geography information.
2. Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English and one or more of the following languages: Russian, Chinese, Arabic, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, French, and/or German.
3. Familiarity with performing Source Gap Identification and Quality Assurance procedures.
4. Experience with two or more of the following: GEOINT Doctrine, GIS Principles, GIS Tools, Geographic Naming Conventions, Geo-referencing, Geospatial Production Systems, and/or producing Geospatial Products.
QUALIFICATION CRITERIA: In addition to the mandatory qualifications, experience in the following is desired:
1. Demonstrated familiarity with the use of Foreign Language Reference Guides.
2. Demonstrated experience with cultural geography and analysis.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of international naming conventions & agreements, romanization
guidelines, toponymy, translation policy & procedure.
4. Demonstrated experience with Python scripting.
