Prescott National Forest – Outdoor Recreation Resource Assistant
Length: Term of positions is 32 weeks; full-time 40 hrs./wk.
Location: Prescott, AZ – Prescott National Forest-West Zone (344 S. Cortez St., Prescott, AZ 86303)
Living Allowance: $18.75/hour + $1000/month housing allowance
Start Date: Target start date in May 2023.

Position Details
Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.
 
Stewards is partnering with Prescott National Forest to provide a 32-week paid, professional Resource Assistant opportunity as an Outdoor Recreation Resource Assistant. The Prescott NF's, West Zone Recreation Program is focused on providing sustainable developed and dispersed outdoor recreation opportunities - mindful of health and safety (employee, volunteer and visitor); resource protection; operating and maintaining outdoor recreation facilities to national standards; building collaborative partnerships; personal/professional development; and good stewardship of government equipment, materials, and supplies.
 
The Resource Assistant (RA) will improve the services and messages guiding recreation visitors in sustainable use and activities in the outdoor environment. Responsible recreation use reduces the impacts of that use to natural resources -- such as erosion from hiking off-trail or driving off-road. The RA will work closely with the West Zone Recreation program manager. The RA will also have opportunities to work with and/or shadow other Forest program areas such as Volunteer and Partnership Coordinator, Wildlife, Botany, Hydrology and Soils, Timber resources, Trails and Wilderness, Fire and Fuels management, Geographic Information Systems, Law Enforcement & Investigations, Engineering, Roads, Facilities, etc.
 
No housing is available for this position.

Essential Responsibilities and Functions:
  • Recruit, train and maintain a cadre of high caliber volunteers supporting the recreation program.
  • Prep and implement Scan and Pay opportunity at high use Campgrounds
  • Participate in maintenance/construction, obliteration and other resource conservation projects related to recreation facilities and outdoor recreation impacts.
  • Provide information and details to the public about the area’s cultural and natural resources, provide insight and guidelines to the forest’s recreation opportunities.
 
Required Skills/ Physical Requirements:
  • The work includes performing physical labor in administrative areas, developed recreation sites and general forest areas. Walking on uneven terrain, exposure to adverse weather, insects, and animals (domestic/wild) is expected. 
  • To successfully perform essential functions, the individual is required to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, etc. May be required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and be able to safely lift 40 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • College/graduate student working towards a degree in natural resources, recreation or landscape architecture or a recent graduate with a degree in similar fields. 
  • Effective communication skills with all ages and diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work both independently and with others collaboratively on projects.
  • Deep interest in natural resource management/recreation and respect for nature. 
  • A desire to gain a deeper understanding and relationship with outdoor recreation and understand what it takes to manage our country's natural settings.
  • Experience and knowledge of outdoor recreation and environmental education and working with the public.
  • Applicants are expected to be highly motivated and willing and able to perform assigned duties with little direct supervision.
  • Ability to work with agency computers and programs, i.e., Microsoft Office Suite of Programs, Excel spreadsheets, performing data entry.
  • Applicants must pass a criminal history background check and should possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Ability to provide documentation for driving USFS vehicles.
  • Must provide personal transportation to and from office.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and understanding of natural resource management.
  • Experience working with volunteers in a resource management context.
  • Knowledge and ability utilizing GIS/GPS equipment in the field.
  • Experience with 4x4 driving.
  • Previous experience working with conservation programs.
  • Experience with recreation site design, construction, and restoration.
  • First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens Certification.

*The USFS Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a rigorous, immersive, paid internship providing developmental and training opportunities for individuals interested in learning more about Forest Service careers. After completing a minimum of 960 hours of satisfactory work and an associate degree, RA’s may acquire a two-year certificate of noncompetitive hiring eligibility. The certificate enables participants to apply to internal merit announcements for qualifying permanent General Schedule FS positions.
