The Johns Hopkins University Student Health & Well-Being (SHWB) practice group supports well-being, primary care, and mental health services for JHU students and learners across all nine schools within the University. Our integrated service delivery model provides dynamic health and well-being promotion, support and programming, student disability services including guidance and resources, and in-person primary and mental health care options at our clinics as well as remote support through phone and online resources.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an inaugural full-time position in the Washington D.C. office located in the newly renovated 555 Pennsylvania Ave. building. This clinic is expected to open for staff in July 2023 and open for patient care at the end of August 2023. The NP needs to be available for travel to Baltimore area campuses for training, service delivery and in-person meetings, when necessary. This will include being available some evenings and may include weekends for extended clinic hours, outreach programs and crisis or emergency response.

The NP is the only primary care clinician within the SHWB suite, thus will need to have the qualifications and experience to function independently with remote supervision. The NP will have the on-site support of a Medical Assistant and Senior Medical Office Coordinator, and will be responsible for supervising these staff members. The SHWB suite also includes mental health providers, health promotion staff, and student disability services staff. The NP will work collaboratively within this multidisciplinary health team to optimize patient outcomes and is responsible for providing comprehensive and age appropriate primary care to the students/learners of Johns Hopkins University. This position is fully funded by SHWB, providers do not bill for services and pay is not based on Relative Value Units (RVUs).

This is a 1.0 FTE full-time exempt position, reporting directly to the University Health Services Nurse Practitioner Manager.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

• Deliver care that is culturally competent, affirming of a wide range of student/learner identities, and promotes the diversity, equity and inclusion values of the Student Health and Well-Being practice.
• Use evidence-based clinical and theoretical knowledge to identify acute and/or chronic health problems through a comprehensive, age appropriate assessment of patients using skills in taking medical histories, screening, physical examinations, ordering diagnostic tests, making diagnoses, prescribing appropriate medications and treatments.

• Educate patients with a significant emphasis on health maintenance and preventative measures.

• Provide continuity of care and coordination of available healthcare services using appropriate referral to agencies and specialists as indicated.

• Assume responsibility and accountability for organizing time and workload to meet patient, staff and departmental needs.

• Assume responsibility and accountability for own patient care decisions. On a regular and continuous basis, exercise administrative judgment and assume responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area.

• Provide supervision to the on-site Medical Assistant who will work collaboratively with the NP, and the Senior Medical Office Coordinator who will support the entire SHWB suite.

• Participate in peer chart reviews and pass periodic laboratory proficiency testing and quality control reviews.

• Systematically record information in an electronic medical record in accordance with state and federal medical/legal requirements.

• Comply with state, federal and ambulatory accreditation requirements, and policies within SHWB.

• Attend SHWB meetings and educational opportunities and show evidence of continued self-development and professional involvement by participating in activities and educational programs of professional organizations.

• Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.

Supervision of others

• One (1) full-time Medical Assistant and one (1) full-time Senior Medical Office Coordinator.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time.
• Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
• Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
• Communication skills using the spoken word.

• Possible exposure to communicable diseases.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• The successful candidate should have experience working with diverse patient populations and appreciate and relate effectively to individuals who hold multiple, intersecting identities including but not limited to: historically marginalized and under-represented populations, various ages and developmental status, cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, international status, disability, gender and sexual identities and presentations.
• Demonstrated competence in young adult health, public health, or college health.
• Philosophical commitment to the care, development, and education of students and trainees.
• Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills.

• Knowledge of Microsoft Word and facility in emails is required.

• Knowledge of Excel helpful.
• Must successfully complete all required and on-going electronic medical records trainings as directed.
• Must complete all required HIPAA, and any other specified online training courses deemed necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's Degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner.
• Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or Washington, D.C.
• Active or eligible for DEA, and Controlled Dangerous Substances registrations. Successful credentialing and privileging through Johns Hopkins Hospital and SHWB.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior supervisory experience preferred.
• 5 years of experience working as an NP in an ambulatory setting.

**Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date**

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
