Civil Engineering Summer 2023 Research Internship: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ERDC-GSL

The Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory solves problems and initiate scientific discovery through a multi-faceted approach that includes field and laboratory data collection and instrumentation development, computational science and data analytics. These techniques are used to develop innovative solutions in the following mission areas: force projection and maneuver support; force protection and weapons effects; civil works and infrastructure; operational support and technology transfer. GSL's main research areas include airfields and pavements, concrete and materials, geotechnical engineering and geosciences, impact and explosion effects, mobility systems, structural engineering, structural mechanics, and survivability engineering. 

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will have the opportunity to participate and gain knowledge in executing cutting-edge research in structural analysis and experimentation. The internship opportunity will include exposure to scaled testing at the Structural Strong Floor to evaluate the structural behavior of components of navigation structures, bridges, and other structures, analyzing results, and proper report writing.

This fellowship provides the opportunity to independently utilize your skills and engage with experts in innovative ideas to move the proposed research forward.

What is the anticipated start date? June 5, 2023

Exact start date will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate.

This appointment is a full-time ten-week research appointment. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

You will receive a stipend to be determined by ERDC-GSL but will be in the range of $4,000-$6,000 monthly. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program.
