CDC Fellowship with the Division of Reproductive Health: Emergency Preparedness and Response Fellowship (Communications, Analyses, and COVID-19)

CDC Office and Location: A health communications / analyst fellowship opportunity is currently available with the Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) team in the Field Support Branch, Division of Reproductive Health (DRH) within the National Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.  
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. 
CDC’s Division of Reproductive Health (DRH) is committed to improving the lives of women, children, and families through research, public health monitoring, scientific assistance, and partnerships. The Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) Team advances science and builds the capacity of the public health system and workforce to optimize reproductive and infant health before, during, and after public health emergencies. 
Research Project: Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in the following activities:
  • Participate in communications support activities for the Emergency and Response Team and the Pregnancy and Infant Linked Outcomes Team (PILOT) on CDC’s COVID-19 response. 
  • Contribute to the production and development of promotional and communication efforts. 
  • Contribute to the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for health communications as needed for revised or new processes 
  • Conduct scoping or systematic reviews of the literature to explore reproductive health outcomes as they relate to public health emergencies. 
  • Support EPR team during preparedness exercises and CDC Emergency Operations Center activations. 
  • Participate in other projects within the team as needed related to health communications, data analysis and interpretation, or presenting and disseminating scientific reports. 
  • Participate in special COVID-19 projects and other COVID-19 vaccination activities. 
Learning Objectives
  • Train on various projects related to emergency risk communications 
  • Train on SAS or other analytic / epidemiologic projects.
  • Learn how to manage and analyze data and to present and disseminate findings.
  • Learn how CDC coordinates emergency-related information sharing and outreach efforts with partner organizations and target audiences using various channels. 
  • Learn how to communicate health information to various audiences, including healthcare providers, partners and the general public.  
  • Learn how to collaborate with subject matter experts and other public health partners. 
  • Learn how to collaborate with the team to prepare for and respond to public health emergencies, including COVID-19.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 1, 2023.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.
Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).
ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination). Additionally, the fellow will follow the telework schedule based on guidance and recommendations applicable to all Division staff.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Public Health), or be currently pursuing the degree to be received by May 15, 2023. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred Skills:
  • Health communications interest and experience. Data management and analytic interest and experience. Willing to support public health emergency preparedness and response efforts.  
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Knowledge/experience in communication, branding, and developing/producing communication materials 
  • Experience developing and managing social media  
  • Project management experience 
  • Experience with Microsoft suite of products 
  • Experience with data analyses and statistical software
