Community Volunteer Ambassador – Camp Nelson National Monument 
 
Length: Term of positions is 50 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk 
Location: Nicholasville, KY 
Compensation: $500/week living allowance, additional $65/week housing allowance, if housing is not provided. 
Start Date: September 11, 2023

Position Title Community Volunteer Ambassador 
 
Position Details: 
Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.  
 
The CVA will work directly with the Chief of Interpretation and Visitor Services to the develop the VIP program at the park, including the VIP handbook, position descriptions, and other policies. The CVA will also perform outreach to recruit, hire, and train VIPs. 
 
Site Description: 
Camp Nelson National Monument, the 418th unit of the National Park Service, preserves and interprets the historic and archeological resources of a U.S. Army supply depot that became one of the largest Civil War-era recruitment and training centers for United States Colored Troops and an African American refugee camp. The monument is a testament to the courage, resiliency, and perseverance of those seeking freedom from slavery and pursuing self-determination during and after the Civil War. The park's volunteer program features two regular VIPs who assist with Visitor Service operations on a weekly basis and special programs. The VIP program also features living history and historic weapons demonstrations, volunteer events (clean-up, trail maintenance, fence removal, painting). 
 
Position Responsibilities: 
  • Develop VIP handbook, position descriptions, and other policies 
  • Help design VIP recruitment packages, pull-up banner, and site bulletin 
  • Perform outreach to recruit, train, and hire VIPs 
 
CVA Minimum Requirements: 
  • Flexible

  • Friendly and outgoing, ability to engage with people from all backgrounds

  • Respectful of others, including NPS staff, volunteers, partners, and visitors  
  • Professional 
  • Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in early November 2023 
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident  
  • High School Diploma/GED 
  • Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old) 
  • Pass fingerprint-based FBI, state criminal, and a national sex offender checks.   
  • Be able to provide proof of a driver’s license and complete a MVR check 
  • Must be over 21 years old or have had license for at least 3 years to be insured in this position. 
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Public speaking skills 
  • Effective communication skills 
  • Experience engaging general public, youth, and people of all ages and backgrounds 
  • Local applicants (commuting distance) 
 
Additional Information: 
Other responsibilities and opportunities include working weekends, occasional evenings (special programs and events), and collaborating with partner organizations and NPS sites, especially ABLI and MISP. The position requires a driver's license and car so the CVA can drive to and from work. The CVA can also use the park vehicle when needed.
