Community Volunteer Ambassador – Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site 
 
Length: Term of positions is 50 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk 
Location: Brookline, MA 
Compensation: $500/week living allowance, additional $65/week housing allowance, if housing is not provided. 
Start Date: September 11, 2023

Position Title Community Volunteer Ambassador 
 
Position Details: 
Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.  
 
This position will work closely park staff across visitor experience, community engagement, and education, grounds management, and cultural resources to re-envision and reinvigorate the volunteer program.  
This position will work alongside our Community and Youth Engagement Intern and our network of 150 community partners established during the Olmsted bicentennial in 2022 to create impactful, intentional, and diverse volunteer opportunities to support park goals, themes, and mission.  
 
Site Information: 
Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site is the home and office of the nation's first landscape architect and premiere park maker. The site interprets nearly 100 years of landscape design principals, practices, and production.  
 
Our current volunteer program engagement practices have been incredibly impacted by the shift in operations due to Covid. Our strong corps of long-standing volunteers was reduced to just 3. We are slowly rebuilding connections with local community members interested in supporting the site through volunteer efforts, including brining on 3 new volunteers for the 2023 public season.  
 
Through the Olmsted bicentennial in 2022, tremendous potential to expand and re-envision our engagement efforts, with a particular eye towards local youth, college students and public serving organizations. 
 
Position Responsibilities: 
  • Work with park staff and community partners to create new volunteer and community engagement opportunities.  
  • Work with park staff to create engaging and coveted volunteer positions in visitor engagement and education.  
  • Create sustainable management processes and documentation to streamline the work of volunteer managers across the park. 
  • Work with park staff to offer at least 2 "park days" for in park volunteer efforts to highlight the on-going cultural landscape management work. 
 
CVA Minimum Requirements: 
  • Ability to thoughtfully work with a team 
  • Interest in history, visitor engagement, community programming, education, landscape architecture, or cultural resources  
  • Strong communication skills 
  • Adaptability 
  • Organized  
  • Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in early November 2023 
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident  
  • High School Diploma/GED 
  • Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old) 
  • Pass fingerprint-based FBI, state criminal, and a national sex offender checks.   
  • Be able to provide proof of a driver’s license and complete a MVR check 
  • Must be over 21 years old or have had license for at least 3 years to be insured in this position. 
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Candidates from the greater Boston area 
  • Experience with public speaking (both formal and informal) 
  • Experience engaging diverse audiences 
 
Additional Information: 
This position will work on a seasonal schedule alongside park staff (September to November Tuesday-Saturday; December to March Monday-Friday; April to June Tuesday-Saturday; July-August Wednesday-Sunday) 
 
One or two evenings or weekends off-schedule may be needed throughout the year to support community events.  
 
Car is not required but driver's license. Driving a government vehicle may be necessary to support off-site experiences.  
 
Opportunities to collaborate and/or shadow at many greater Boston area parks (LONG, JOFI, MIMA, BOST, ADAM, SAMA, etc).
