Community Volunteer Ambassador – Reconstruction Era National Historical Park 
 
Length: Term of positions is 50 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk 
Location: Beaufort, SC 
Compensation: $500/week living allowance, additional $65/week housing allowance, if housing is not provided. 
Start Date: September 11, 2023

Position Title Community Volunteer Ambassador 
 
Position Details: 
Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.  
 
The CVA will work with the volunteer coordinator to strengthen community partnerships with Penn Center, University of South Carolina Beaufort, and Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor while also helping to reinforce the park's existing volunteer and interpretive programs through community outreach. 
 
Site Description: 
Reconstruction Era National Historical Park is spread amongst three different sites on two different islands on the South Carolina coast. The volunteer program, while in its infancy, has historically consisted of retirees in addition to local college students who have worked in visitor services. The park is looking to expand volunteer operations to other divisions and reflect the diversity of the region through work with the Gullah Geechee community. 
 
Position Responsibilities: 
  • Working with the park's volunteer coordinator to recruit additional volunteers  
  • Fostering a diverse and inclusive environment within the park through community engagement  
  • Assisting with interpretive programming and community events, as well as community event planning 
 
CVA Minimum Requirements: 
  • Outgoing and friendly demeanor in addition to a positive attitude 
  • Customer service experience is helpful  
  • Knowledge of local community and/or Reconstruction era history in the local community 
  • Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in early November 2023 
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident  
  • High School Diploma/GED 
  • Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old) 
  • Pass fingerprint-based FBI, state criminal, and a national sex offender checks.   
  • Be able to provide proof of a driver’s license and complete a MVR check 
  • Must be over 21 years old or have had license for at least 3 years to be insured in this position. 
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Local applicants  
  • Public speaking skills 
  • Effective communication skills, especially with staff and community partners 
  • Customer and visitor service skills 
 
Additional Information: 
Candidates would preferably be local, as there is no housing provided by the park. The park schedule is currently Tuesday-Saturday, so weekend shifts are a necessary part of the position. The growing relationships with community partners allow for opportunities to collaborate with various sites and groups in the region as well. While the park is spread out among three sites, they are all within a 10 to 15 minute drive of each other.
