Community Volunteer Ambassador – San Juan National Historic Site 
 
Length: Term of positions is 50 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk 
Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico 
Compensation: $565/week living allowance 
Start Date: September 11, 2023

Position Title Community Volunteer Ambassador 
 
Position Details: 
Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities. 
 
CVA will work alongside park's volunteer manager to improve San Juan National Historic Site's Volunteer Program and help the agency to accomplish its mission of providing opportunities of education and enjoyment to unrepresented communities and minority groups in Puerto Rico. 
 
Site Description: 
San Juan National Historic Site is comprised by a massive fortification system built by the Spaniards between 1500's and late 1700's. It was declared a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1983. 
 
San Juan National Historic Site's volunteer program offers plenty of opportunities to people from all ages, diverse background and expertise in the fields of interpretation, cultural resources, administration, maintenance and law enforcement. It also has a volunteer core of around 30 volunteers including reenactors. 
 
Position Responsibilities: 
  • Plan, organize and implement a community program that helps San Juan National Historic Site to be integrated into disadvantaged neighbor communities. 
  • Develop and implement innovative volunteer recruitment strategies and activities that allow the development of a bigger and diverse park's VIP program. 
  • Work with park's departments to develop educational activities for the professional development of volunteers. 
 
CVA Minimum Requirements: 
  • Have experience working with public during high school, college, volunteering or in a previous job. 
  • Good communication skills. 
  • Responsible.  
  • Good organization and performance skills. 
  • Effectiveness working in teams and individually.   
  • Great interpersonal relations. 
  • Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in early November 2023 
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident  
  • Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old) 
  • High School Diploma/GED  
  • Pass fingerprint-based FBI, state criminal, and a national sex offender checks.   
  • Be able to provide proof of a driver’s license and complete a MVR check 
  • Must be over 21 years old or have had license for at least 3 years to be insured in this position. 
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Local Puerto Rico resident. 
  • Be fully bi-lingual (English and Spanish). 
  • Ability to work with children and elderly people. 
  • Resident of a neighbor unrepresented community. 
  • Interested in learning about the role and mission of National Park Service in Puerto Rico. 
  • Currently finishing or already finished a post-secondary education program, preferably in tourism, education, social anthropology or sociology fields.  
  • Knowledge on writing proposals. 
 
Additional Information: 
  • Open to work during weekends and holidays.  
  • Open to work during some evening programs. 
  • Submit proof of driver's license. 
  • No housing is available. 
 
Benefits: 
  • CVA will receive a weekly stipend of $565

  • The position is eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award $6,495.00 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of the program
