Position Title Community Volunteer Ambassador

Position Details:
Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.

The CVA in 2020 was able to compile a list of local contacts, previously unconnected to the park. In 2022, the newest CVA has been able to use and expand that community map to resume our outreach efforts in a post-COVID-outbreak community. We have been able to reconnect with our major community partners at The Seneca Falls Historical Society, the Museum of Waterways and Industry, and the National Women’s Hall of Fame and to combine volunteer recruitment efforts and increase visibility for all our organizations’ needs.

A CVA in the upcoming cohort will allows us to keep stride on the progress started in 2022-2023. By using the resources and connections developed by our previous ambassador among [previously unlinked] groups like veteran’s recreation leagues and different universities, we will be able to extend and enhance the pilot events created this year, to create stronger community recognition and involvement. Based on the second year of events, the CVA will help produce a “playbook” of successful community outreach for the Volunteer Program Manager (Education Specialist) which incorporates contact information, run of show, and best practices for each event. This report will then be incorporated in the draft VIP Program Strategy.

A CVA in 2023-24 will also help us to expanding opportunities for youth volunteers that were previously deprioritized in 2022-23. These efforts will help local youth to develop a life-long connection to the park and to the National Park Service--as well as stimulating professional curiosity through exposure to a variety of park disciplines including Cultural Resource Management, Interpretation, and Maintenance.

Site Information:
Women’s Rights National Historical Park preserves, protects, and interprets sites in Seneca Falls and Waterloo, New York associated with the 1848 Women’s Rights Convention and the legacy of the struggle for equality. The park inspires in-person and virtual visitors through engagement with the religious, economic, political, cultural heritage, and social landscapes that ignited the American women’s rights movement to inform the present and our collective future.

WORI's small pool of volunteers has been, for many years, mostly retirees from the local community who give a few hours a week to support our frontline staff and assist with small projects.

Through the recruitment efforts of the current CVA, the park has doubled the number of volunteers and volunteer inquiries in 2022-23. The goal for 2023-24 is to have a 75% engagement rate with volunteer inquiries and another exponential increase in regular volunteers.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work with and through park partners to identify communication and recruitment opportunities.

  • Produce a “playbook” of successful community outreach which incorporates contact information, run of show, and best practices for each event. This report will then be incorporated in the draft VIP Program Strategy.
