Community Volunteer Ambassador – Lassen Volcanic National Park

Length:  Term of positions is 50 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk 
Location:  Mineral, CA 
Compensation:  $500/week living allowance, additional $65/week housing allowance, if housing is not provided. 
Start Date:  September 11, 2023

Position Title:  Community Volunteer Ambassador 
 
Position Details: 
Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.  
 
The CVA's primary objective will be to help establish, recruit, select, train, retain, and manage new Visitor Services volunteer programs for the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center and the Loomis Museum, drawing from local communities around Lassen Volcanic National Park. 
 
Site Description: 
Lassen Volcanic National Park is home to steaming fumaroles, meadows freckled with wildflowers, clear mountain lakes, and numerous volcanoes. Situated in northern California at elevations over 5000 feet, the park provides designated wilderness, dark skies, and over 100 miles of hiking trails. The Community Volunteer Ambassador intern will work within Interpretation, Education, and Volunteers to expand volunteer programs across the park. 
 
Position Responsibilities: 
  • Meet with and establish preliminary contacts with local community groups, colleges and universities, and other organizations. 
  • Establish, recruit, select, train, retain, and help manage new Visitor Services volunteer programs  
  • Update volunteer management databases 
  • Conduct outreach and local travel to meet with community groups 
  • Table at local fairs and festivals 
  • Assist with education outreach 
  • Assist CVA supervisor in identifying barriers to volunteering at Lassen Volcanic National Park 
 
CVA Minimum Requirements: 
  • Positive, hard-working, friendly, and flexible attitude 
  • Able to be a team player and work independently 
  • Comfortable with public speaking and doing public outreach 
  • Experience with volunteers 
  • Enjoys nature and recreating outside 
  • Comfort and experience in winter conditions 
  • Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in early November 2023 
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident  
  • High School Diploma/GED 
  • Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old) 
  • Pass fingerprint-based FBI, state criminal, and a national sex offender checks.   
  • Be able to provide proof of a driver’s license and complete a MVR check 
  • Must be over 21 years old or have had license for at least 3 years to be insured in this position. 
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Public speaking 
  • Effective written and spoken communication skills 
  • Engaging general public 
  • Experience with volunteer management 
  • Experience with social media and Adobe Creative suite desired 
 
Additional Information: 
  • Position is remote and requires driver's license and car. 
  • Schedule includes weekends and some evenings. 
  • Opportunities to visit other Northern California national park sites. 
  • Shared housing may be available. 
  • Significant winter conditions provides ample opportunities for winter recreation.
