Information Technology Internship Fall 2023

The Information Technology Internship is located within the Office of Operations at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), and is responsible for the overall planning, direction and management of the Museum’s IT programs and operations. Conducting business analysis to identify Museum business needs and goals and develop innovative solutions to resolve difficult issues, identifying management improvements and cost savings, and effectively leveraging emerging opportunities. This department designs, secures, provisions, and supports information systems used to manage the museum’s core functions including advancement/membership, visitor services, collections management, office automation environment. The IT Department does not manage web services, application development, interactive technologies, or audio-visual systems.

Information Technology​​​​​​​ is responsible for the overall planning, direction and management of the Museum’s IT programs and operations. Conducting business analysis to identify Museum business needs and goals and develop innovative solutions to resolve difficult issues, identifying management improvements and cost savings, and effectively leveraging emerging opportunities.

The Information Technology Internship will assist the Information Technology Operations Department and will support a wide range of tasks from configuring and troubleshooting laptops, performing cyber security and privacy assessments, equipment inventories and storage management. The intern can anticipate being assigned at least one special project during the internship that will explore and examine the potential uses of AI in an operational IT environment. Note: web and application development and coding are not included in the internship. The Information Technology Intern will learn basic cyber security concepts and practices; how to configure and test a laptop (Windows and Apple); understand the daily operations of an IT department; interpret business requirements, and how to apply technology solutions; how to work independently.

Duties Include (but are not limited to):

·      Configuring laptops (Windows and iOS)

·      Running reports using Smithsonian software

·      Conducting privacy assessments

·      Participating in vulnerability management and technical project meetings

·      Supporting the IT inventory process

·      Calling NMAAHC end-users to triage technical issues

·      Providing input in the IT Strategic Plan

·      Research artificial intelligence tools and proposing uses in an IT environment
