Catholic Charities Orange County Volunteer & Development AmeriCorps VISTA

Catholic Charities of Orange County provides services in the County of Orange in California, with an approximate population of 3,168,044, according to the most recent Census 2020 data. Our local VISTA Member will help us build capacity by creating and implementing policies, safety practices, follow-up, and community engagement efforts to develop a sustainable volunteer and donor relation model. Our VISTA's operations will be centered at our Cantlay Food Distribution Center located in the City of Santa Ana, which has the highest low-income population in Orange County. The center is open three days a week, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with a special food distribution schedule for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. Serving over 1,800 families and individuals every week has become a challenge without having the proper volunteer engagement and management. In 2021, we took on a greater project to create a working farm and garden at our food distribution center. The vision for the working farm is to be an integral part of the local community, a place where people can learn how to grow fresh food and discover the benefits of harvesting nutritious fruit and vegetables. We have incorporated 86 garden beds and a hydroponic vertical irrigation system. Our goal is to integrate instructional sessions about growing sustainable gardens and bringing awareness about the importance of healthy living. Through this initiative, we have started distributing fresh food for our visitors at the center. Our VISTA will help us develop relations with volunteers and donors, implement a volunteer schedule & follow-up, and be a part of our organization's overall capacity-building strategy. This VISTA position is a part of Catholic Charities USA’s Family Strengthening Program, a national intermediary project. As a member, you will meet virtually with VISTA Leaders and other VISTAs serving throughout the country, all focused on alleviating poverty.
