Marine GIS Analyst (Summer Position)

  • The primary focus area for this position will be to work with NCCOS and partners to develop analytical and spatial products related to fish habitat and coastal resources for the Middle Peninsula Habitat Focus Area, working with more experienced GIS analysts.

  • Duties:

  • • Work with NCCOS staff to collect and compile relevant ecological data
  • • Organize and input data into a database, maintain accurate detailed records of observations, measurements and results
  • • Develop and maintain metadata records for spatial data
  • • Develop one or more GIS-based visualizations such as a Storymap or ArcGIS Online project
  • • Assist with development of a written report
  • • Set and meet deadlines for completion of work in timely manner
  • • Work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute to other relevant projects as directed

Qualifications:

• BS or MS in Environmental Studies, Marine Biology, Ecology, Geographic Information Systems, or a related field, with some experience in coastal environments and fish ecology preferred
• At least two college courses (or equivalent training) using ESRI GIS products, specifically ArcMap 10.X, ArcGIS Pro, or ArcGIS Online
• Data collection, preparation, workflow development and spatial processing
• Familiarity with raster and vector datasets
• Knowledge of R and/or Python beneficial
• Knowledge of basic statistical methods
• Ability to maintain focus and quality on routine and repetitive tasks
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to be flexible in responding to changes in schedules and job priorities
• Able to work in a team environment
• Ability to follow safety standards and conduct work in an environmentally conscientious manner
• Experience with computer programs such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Apps
• Ability to effectively split hours between telework and in-office work
• Processing of a National Agency Check and fingerprinting will be required
• Must be flexible to allow for changing weekday work schedules during normal working hours due to staffing restrictions related to COVID
