Tax Intern (Spring 2024)

The Tax Intern will work directly with the Director of Real Estate & Indirect Tax and other Tax department team members who assist with indirect taxes, real estate property tax, sales and use tax, and business licenses. This position is a full-time internship opportunity for the Spring 2024 semester (January through late April/early May) with flexible start and end dates that align with your school semester. Hopeful application timeline: application will be open until early October with interviews occurring on a rolling basis throughout September and October and candidate selected by late October.

What you’ll learn:

Throughout the internship term this role provides the student with the following:
  • Training on real estate tax assessment and appeals, sales and use tax reporting and the other indirect taxes
  • Further develop skills related to working as part of a team and interacting with other professionals at varying levels of the company
  • Further develop Excel skills
  • Further develop the process of documenting work performed on projects and communicating effectively with supervisors and company personnel, asking questions, providing feedback, and offering insight
  • Further develop time management skills and the ability to be responsible for more than one project at a time
  • Appreciation of commercial real estate industry and what we do at Phillips Edison that sets us apart


What you'll do:

The Tax Intern will work directly with the Director of Real Estate & Indirect Tax and other Tax department team members who assist with indirect taxes, real estate property tax, sales and use tax, and business licenses.
  • Preparation of documentation required for property tax appeal review 
  • Assist with gathering information for property tax reporting requirements
  • Preparation of monthly sales tax reporting
  • Assist in preparation and filing of personal property tax returns
  • Assist with accounting entries to assure tax account balances are accurate
  • Assist with implementation of internal processes to assure sound internal controls
  • Identify areas of improvement to make process more efficient and associates more productive
  • Assist with state tax compliance, including state tax estimates, extensions, and returns
  • Assist with preparation of federal tax returns
  • Assist with ad hoc research and report assignments


What we're looking for:

  • A current undergraduate student who is able to work full-time and in person during the semester
  • Current university student enrolled in a degree seeking program studying Accounting or another related business field with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, specifically Excel
  • Ability to work independently, with direction and guidance, and on a team (as needed)
  • Excellent organizational skills with proven ability to balance multiple priorities at once
  • Ability to multi-task on various projects with hard deadlines; must be able to prioritize and manage time appropriately for recurring duties and ad hoc tasks as they arise
