Intern Program:

The paid Summer Internship Program is an opportunity to experience what it’s like to be a full-time BNSF employee. As an intern at BNSF, you’ll be given real-life, impactful assignments that will put your skills and education into practice. Your summer project will combine classroom experience and real-life business situations to provide value-added work to BNSF. The program is designed to identify students who will be hired by BNSF as full-time Management Trainees after they graduate. During your summer internship, you will get the chance to network with peers, our Business Resource Groups, and Senior Leaders throughout the BNSF network.

 

Work Location: Fort Worth, TX

Anticipated Start Date: 5/29/2024

Salary: $4,781 per month 

 

RELOCATION WILL BE REQUIRED:

  • A candidate must be willing to live within 50 miles of our company headquarters in Fort Worth, TX for the internship
  • Relocation assistance may be provided to those who are moving more than 50 driving miles from their permanent residence    

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • The Summer Internship Program provides interns an opportunity to learn more about how our efficient, safe, and sustainable rail network supports the global supply chain. Interns gain experience in our Track, Engineering Services, Structures, Signal, Mechanical, Transportation, and Environmental departments in order to learn what it’s like to work at BNSF full-time.
  • Operating one of the largest railroads in North America, we have countless opportunities for interns to develop their skills, create new ideas, and even travel! The objective of our Summer Internship Program is to find students that will join us after graduation as part of our Management Trainee Program 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The program begins with a two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas where interns receive a company overview and network with company leaders.
  • The remaining time will be spent supporting ongoing projects and completing on-the-job field training conducted at assigned training location which will include numerous job shadows across multiple departments

 NCS (Network Control Systems): 

  • The Network Control Systems team designs, develops, deploys, and maintains the critical Train Control Systems that enable BNSF to safely and efficiently move trains across a vast 32,500-mile rail network. Managing these systems and systems of systems requires a diverse collection of technical skillsets coupled together with railroad Operations and railroad engineering expertise. 
  • In addition to core Train Control technologies, the NCS designs and supports the systems that are responsible for monitoring and assessing system health, measuring KPI’s, collecting and analyzing large amounts of data utilizing data science principles, and Laser mapping the network to ensure the digital railroad infrastructure is in sync with the physical one. 
  • Interns will broaden their knowledge of critical safety system design, data modeling, data science principals’, GIS Systems, LiDAR mobile mapping, .NET, C/C++, Python software development, web development custom designed frameworks, project management, and locomotive systems. Interns will be exposed to the methodologies, principles, and design considerations associated with critical systems that demand a highly available and fault tolerant infrastructure. 

 Some concepts and tools we use: 

  • Web Services, .NET Development, ESRI products, SDLC, Python, Data modeling concepts (Conceptual, Logical, and Physical Models), Splunk, R, Pandas SQL Server, Visio, Tableau, Remedy and many more. 
  • Train Management and Dispatch System

  • Hyrail Limits Compliance System
  • Network Monitoring System
  • Systems Operations Center

TRAVEL:   

  • Minimal travel up to 25%

 WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Primarily an office environment, with some field activities. 
  • Normal office hours, Monday through Friday, with weekend or evening work as required. 

 SPECIFIC REQUIREMENT: 

  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work. 

 BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Authorization to work in the US without Company sponsorship now AND in the future. 
  • Valid Driver's License. 
  • Ability to work in a 24/7 environment.
  • Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
  • Able to work in a shop, terminal, or field environment, climb on ladders and walk on uneven surfaces safely.
  • Able to travel up to 25% of the time based on business need.
  • Able to relocate to Fort Worth, Texas for the summer.
  • Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate degree from an accredited university, and will complete my degree no earlier than Fall 2024, Spring 2025, Fall 2025, Spring 2026, or Fall 2026.
  • Anticipate to have at least a 2.50 cumulative GPA with a degree in Engineering OR a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA with a non-Engineering degree.
  • Have four (4) years or less of professional work experience, EXCLUDING internships, part-time jobs, or positions held pursuing a degree in high school and/or college.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Business, OR a similar degree program
