The Air Quality Program (AQP) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Quality Assurance Coordinator (Environmental Specialist 5) position. This position is located in our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.
As the Quality Assurance Coordinator, you will serve a critical and foundational role for the Air Quality Program’s efforts to protect and improve air quality in Washington State. As the AQP statewide expert in quality assurance, you will lead the Quality Assurance team, research, plan, and oversee the development and implementation of the Air Quality Program quality assurance system, ensuring that our data are a bedrock of credibility for our environmental protection efforts. Tele-work options for this position: This position will be eligible for up to a 80% tele-work schedule. Duties

What makes this role unique?
The Air Quality Program’s Quality Assurance Coordinator is the statewide expert in all matters of quality assurance. This vitally important position ensures accurate and reliable data that are critical to the program’s and agency’s credibility and are used to understand, control, and reduce, air pollution across the state. You will also lead our highly collaborative and effective quality assurance team.
What you will do:
- Serve as the Air Quality Program expert in all matters of quality assurance.
- Evaluate, plan, develop and direct the effectiveness of the Washington State Ambient Air Monitoring Network quality system.
- Research and implement federal and state quality system requirements, sharing information among the statewide air monitoring team.
- Serve as a lead to the QA team, including assigning performance audits, quarterly data quality assessments, and developing new and revising existing standard operating procedures.
- Use advanced statistical approaches to correlate air sensor readings to Federal Equivalent method monitors and apply resultant correction factors to increase reliability and accuracy of air sensor pollution readings.
- Write standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality assurance project plans (QAPPs); evaluate and approve SOPs and QAPPs written by others to use within the Washington State Ambient Air Monitoring Network.
- Conduct performance audits on air monitors throughout the statewide ambient air monitoring network.
- Conduct a thorough review of collected data, quality control results, and documentation to validate ambient air monitoring data collected from monitors across the state.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:
- 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
- 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.
A total of ten years of experience and/or education as described below:
- Experience: Involving environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning. One year of professional experience must be conducting quality assurance or quality control.
- Education: Involving a major study in environmental, physical, or natural science, environmental planning or other allied field.

- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

- Experience applying the principles involved in calibrating, maintaining, and operating air monitoring equipment.
- Experience using R, SigmaPlot, ChemStat, Minitab, SAS, IGOR or other data analysis software.
- Experience reading, interpreting, and applying federal and state laws, regulations, rules, policy, and guidance.
- Experience with exploratory data analysis and familiarity with non-parametric statistics.
- Ability to analyze environmental data sets; to take initiative to research issues, to seek out and use computer models and other data sources, to and initiate and complete projects.
- Ability to interpret and explain technical information to non-technical individuals.
