Sustainability Intern (Summer 2024)

The Environmental Affairs and Sustainability Intern will assist in the preparation, configuration, and implementation of a company-wide environmental sustainability program. The Student will engage directly with the Director of Environmental Affairs & Sustainability. This unique opportunity will help lead Butterball to a more sustainable future.

About the Environmental Affairs and Sustainability Internship

Butterball takes great pride in its environmental affairs record and its efforts to be a good steward of the environment.

Butterball facilities track monthly sustainability performance in the areas of waste, recycling, and utility usage (gas, electricity, and water). We have done a full accounting of our Scopes 1, 2, and 3 GHG inventory, with plans to set science-based targets in 2024.

This 10-12 week internship will work directly with the Butterball professionals 35-40 hours a week leading the charge to support our environmental and sustainability programs. You will support the continued implementation of a new state-of-the-art tracking system of our company’s emissions, improve processes, standardize data, and play a critical role in helping Butterball make a lasting and positive impact to its employees and the environment.  

Essential Duties, Functions, and Responsibilities:
  •    Assist with the transition of sustainability information from current state to a third-party hosted platform.
  •    Attend weekly virtual status update meetings and provide documentation to the Director, Environmental Affairs and Sustainability.
  •    Assist our subject matter experts with the collection of sustainability documentation and reports necessary for solution designs.
  •    Review prototypes and prepare team member feedback to the third-party platform.
  •    Participate in system reviews to ensure proper functionality.
  •    Assist with ensuring an effective change management process is in place.
  •    Coordinate implementations and training with the system administrator and internal stakeholders across multiple facilities.
  •    Additional projects may be assigned based on company initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:
  •    Bachelor’s degree, or preferably pursuing a degree in Environmental or Sustainability related discipline.
  •    Previous work experience, having had part or full-time employment, internships, or other co-op projects.  
  •    Strong project management skills (planning, scheduling, coordination, requirements gathering, problem-solving, etc.) and attention to detail. 
  •    Ability to work in a cross-functional environment with all levels of leadership.
  •    Must have ability to communicate effectively and follow verbal and written instructions.
  •    Must be willing and able to perform physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
  •    Must be at least 18 years of age and legally authorized to work in the United States.
  •    Must pass a background check, drug screen and pre-employment physical.
