Career Pathways Professional Mentor

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. In more than 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities, our dedicated teams provide clean water, shelter, health care, education and empowerment support to refugees and displaced people.

SCOPE OF WORK: The IRC’s Career Pathways program assists IRC clients to access professional jobs. Working in the fields of Healthcare, Administration, Finance, Security, Civil Engineering/Construction, Project Management, IT, and Transportation, the volunteer mentor will assist in implementing career training at IRC, getting clients into technical trainings off-site, and ensure participants enter professional employment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Guide clients to their short- and long-term goals in specific sectors
  • Conduct study sessions within the specific sector and provide subject matter expert support
  • Use assessments to gauge client strengths, weaknesses, and proficiencies
  • Run classes open to multiple clients on topics such as professional writing, job application, interviewing, and networking
  • Assist clients in navigating scholarships and other financial support opportunities to help clients enroll in and complete training and recertification programs
  • Review and edit client work such as homework, professional writing, and financial aid applications
  • Assist in building out employment networks for clients including attending job fairs and researching/ reaching out to employers
  • Provide guidance on sector-specific job placement

REQUIREMENTS:

  • MUST be able to work ON-SITE at the Sacramento office and surrounding areas. 
  • Previous multi-cultural experience and demonstrated ability to communicate well with people of varied backgrounds strongly preferred
  • Digital fluency with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Windows, and other online platforms
  • Expert understanding of the job market in professional sectors
  • Education: BA degree minimum
  • Solid teaching/mentoring experience
  • Currently active in the field

This position reports to the Career Development Coordinator. 

  • This is an unpaid position.
  • Work-related driving is eligible for reimbursement at the charitable mileage rate
